97 250cr. oil in chamber and smokes...help!
i just bought a 97cr for cheap. the guy who sold it said he changed the piston/rings and that he installed the same gaskets. im familiar with car honda engine but not with morotrcycle engines. i started the bike and it smoked like hell. Now it wont even start so i imagine that the chanber got saturated with oil. its a two stroke so i really dont know where the oil might come from. i've watched some videos and will take it apart. thanks advice will be appreciated!
Some 2-strokers smoke a bunch if they haven't been started in a few weeks. Did the guy seem like he knew what he was doing? I'd never buy a bike or a motor that had been rebuilt by some honkey unless I was planning on rebuilding it myself.
well the bike hadn't been started in about a year he said. yeah it seemed like he knew what he was doing. he had lots of other dirt bikes. It was cheap thats why i got it and i got home it started but after a while it shuts down and wont start. he did tell me oil came into the combustion chaimber. i plan to take it apart put new pinton and rings and change all gaskets. ive done car top ends but never bike. thanks
no man, thats why im posting it up here. i have two other quads and i do the regular maintance on them but they both 4 stroke. i know that the that the piston seals and opens the the intake, exhaust, and fuel ports. i would like to find out first where that oil might be coming from. i know that the fuel is mixed with oil but that wont cause so much smoke. so the i think it can be gear oil or something like that.thanks!
Well, it sounds like the bike is oil-injected, probably doesn't run premix.
Did the seller say he drained the carbs before he stored it? Old gas = bad news.

im asuming itruns a mix he gave me the little mixed bottles but will i harm the bike if i pour in pure gas? i think its a two stroke. i found this video and the engine is the same except my bike is a honda. if you guys have time check it out. ima try and follow this. i just want to figuer out where the oil can be runing into. thanks

two strokes are supposed to smoke a lil bit especially at start up. i had a 98 cr 250 which i think was the same for 97 .. the reason it smoking really bad is probably has really old gas and oil premix in it...if it sat for over a year then most of the gas evaporated and the oil mixture is really rich....the best thing to do is drain all the gas out of it. replace the sparkplug with a B8ES and go to your local bike shop and buy some two stroke premix and mix the gas and oil to a 32/1 ratio... if is still has starting problem then most likely the carb is all gunked up with the old bad gas... if you have any more questions let me know... i been riding 2strokes since i was 7...
edit......^^^^^^DO NOT i repete DO NOT put straight gas in it...it will totally f it up....the lil bottles are most likely the premix that you mix with regular gas....buy a ratio right at your local dealer so you know what mixture your using...

well ima take it apart and see what the problem is cause now it wont start. ill kep you posted on what happens. thanks for all your support HT.
yea its nothing to drop the carb and clean it out...i could do it under 30 min....just make sure you clean all the jets and put everything back together right....also you need to buy or find a manual...it will show you everything you need to know about the bike and how to work on it....let me know if you have any more questions

Edit: i think you just took out the "needle" part of the carb you have to comepletly take the carb apart. like in the pic link i gave you....
i dont think you cleaned all the jets right. when you take the carb apart you have 2 parts the bottom which is
just a shell with a line coming from it. then you have the top. the top half has the floats and jets. look at this pic

you should have taken out and cleaned 31,32,33 those are the main jets the make the bike run/idle. and check the #2 sometimes trash gets in their...after that get some compressed air and blow through all the lines and holes to make sure all the trash is out...all it takes is 1 tiny peace of trash to make a bike not run
when you say oil drips from the exhaust port are you talking about near the head or the from the exhaust silencer at the end of the bike?
if its the head-there are 2 gaskets that fit on the header pipe that need to be replaced.
if its the exhaust silencer then you are still running wayyyyy to rich.
if it still doesn't run right check the reeds. they are located infront of the carb they are usually bolted down with 4 bolts...its kind of hard to explain but thats when a manual comes in...the bikebandit link i gave you should give you a good start finding what parts go where and ect.....a good source is thumper talk they should have everything you need to know about cleaning/working/riding any type of bike..all you need to do is research...hope this helps

i did take apart the carb and cleaned the inside but not the jets. as for the oil it leaks from where the exhaust pipe meets the motor where the fumes exit. when you refer to running rich am i ruining to much fuel or to much mis in there. i have the 32/1 bottle mixes but is it a bottle per gallon of gas? thanks!!!!!
For the exhaust leak you need these
http://www.rockymountainatv.com/prod...#vehicleSelect
you dont have to get that brand but thats what it looks like.
and you deff need this(like in Jasper_db1 link, deff read it will tell you about mixing pre mix) http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...J5TcmQfsn7GxAQ.
i will tell you now motocross/dirtbikes are not a cheap hobby. They can get on the pricey side when fixing up a used bike. But once you get it in top notch shape they maintain pretty good, just normal wear and tear stuff.
ohh if you can show us some pics that would be good.
ok so i turned it on again and it smoked a lot. the leak comes from where the exhaust meets the engine( like the pic shows)

in this pic you can see the leak as well. also if you can see the gasket right below the exhaust i think thats where the oil leak is the guy told me he re-used the same gaskets. thanks!

yea thats the exhaust header gaskets, from the second pic are you saying it leaking at both places or just from the header? if its the top the gaskits will stop it.
i didnt know that the 97 had bolts holding the header exhaust to the head itself...usally they just use springs to hold them in place.
Have you drained all the old gas out of the tank? also change the sparkplug...
have you drained/changed the crankcase oil yet?
you need to do a regular tune up before you try to crank/ride it...
can you take pics of the whole bike?

It looks like it's missing the spring used to hold the header to the manifold flange too. Maybe the smoke he's seeing is typical 2-smoke smoke coming out of the wrong places.
+1 for doing the basics. This should be a no brainer for anyone buying a used vehicle where the service record is spotty. Reused gaskets = idiot PO who probably didn't take care of his ****.

ok cool so ima change the gasket. get the rubber exhaust pieces and clean out the jets and see how it goes cause the bike still shuts off if i let go of the throtle. thanks!
ok s i opened it up all the way. the ring and the gasket seem fine. the nuts the hold the cumbustion chaber in place where a bit lose. i also cleaned out the jets. ill fire it up see how it goes. any ideas on the mix. i know its 32:1 but how much fuel per bottle.
