why do i keep on breaking wheel studs?!
i broke 3 studs already since i put on my 15 inch rota SS.... and its only been about 4 months. I also noticed that my lug nuts would get loose sometimes for no reason. I have a 98 integra. Anyone else have this problem or a solution?
Lemme guess. You are using STOCK lugnuts.
that is your problem. Get some tuner style lugnuts.

i know how you feel.. i have the worst luck with wheel studs also.
one way to prevent it is to do most of the work on your car yourself and then hand-tighten the lugs. this means putting your car on stands and taking just the wheels/tires to discount tire in your old van or truck so they don't screw up the threads with their airgun. they've f*cked up my studs on two separate occasions.

in case ur wondering....the first time i broke a stud.. it was on my front passenger side.. i hit a pot hole really bad.. enough to make me think i might've bent a rim... luckily i didn't.. a few days later... that wheel started squeaking alot and i noticed that my lugs are pretty loose.. one of the nuts come off... i think the stud was cracked in there or something... so when i put more pressure on taking off my lugnut.. the stud broke off with it...
the second time... i was taking off my rims.. and the stud on the rear passenger side just came off with the lugnut
third time... i totally forgot i was rolling on 3 studs on the passenger rear... and did some long dist driving... luckily nothing happened when i was on the highway.. but when i got into town.. i saw that another one broke on the same rim!! and no it wasn't on opposite sides... 2 studs right next to each other broke off... so i dropped my car off at the local auto shop.. and im about to go there in a few minutes to have them fix it

omg... this morning... i was making sure all my nuts were tighten bc i was gonna move my car... and 2 more studs broke off like nothing. This time it was on the driver side rear! WTF?!
Ugh I broke 1 of mine this weekend too. Stock stud, wheel, lug nut too.
Supposed to torque the nuts to 80ft/lbs which doesnt feel like that much with a torque wrench, but thats what they say...

Missing 2 lugs (diff wheels) myself. One just twisted off w/ the tuner lug nut and the other got damaged by an idiot. Any one know how much it costs to repair them at a shop ? I don't feel like taking the wheel off and hammering away myself.

quick question, are you doing this after the car has been driven? like is the wheels hot? that will break the lugs if it is hot...hth....or your studs may be rusted inside......?
WHAT KIND OF LUGNUTS ARE YOU USING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????

no offense but I think its you..everytime they broke.. it was when you were working on it and there must be something your doing incorrectly to be breaking all those bolts/ lug studs.. I have a 95 and have NEVER broken a wheel stud and also have a 97 honda and never broke the lugs on that either.. tell us about your tightening methods..
my guess is that your NOT using a torque wrench and your just slipping on a wrench/tire iron or ratchet.. then putting all your weight on it to "make sure its tight" or something like that... I've been using a torque wrench on cars (yes I have rims and tuner lugs too) and I've never broken a wheel stud since... what kind of lugs are you using? if your using lugs that require a key/adaptor, then your standing/pushing down on the lug studs/lug/key for dear life it'll probably break them...

It might not be his fault... At sometime in the cars life, someone may have put the lug nuts on with an impact, and overtorqued them ALOT. This could have stretched the lugs, and are just now breaking after the extra cycling.
Torque Wrench - 80 lbs. Proper Lug Nuts, Rotas - Cone, not Acorn.

Mine snapped because my wheel almost fell off lol (
Acura technician) And I drove it 2 miles home, a month later the stud broke on that corner. I believe they were damaged from that incident. I am having all 4 replaced today!
I normally dont use a torque wrench but I have used one before at 80ft/lbs so I know about what it should feel like... Approx is ok too

My guess is that he is using stock lugnuts. These lugnuts will not hold any torque very long on a wheel that requires cone shaped lugs.
So they loosen, then the wheel starts to put uneven load on the lugs and work hardens them. If they dont break by themselves, the next time he touchs them they do.
I have never broken a stud either, and I don't use a torque wrench to tighten my wheels, which I change often. I use a breaker bar, but I don't put all my weight on it. Never had a problem.

Also, keep in mind that Rotas are Lug Centric wheels, so if your lug nuts come loose, the wheels will wobble around ALOT more than stock wheels which are Hub Centric... Get a spacer!
I had some of the worst experience while doing a new set of rims...
the guy b4 me put on some crome rims and tunner lugs, and I have no idea how the heck he did it, a gun was needed to take off the lugs, and broke several keys in the process...but one of the lug on the rear pasenger side just can't come off...went to diff mechanics and still can't take off the last f@uking lug
...spray tons of wd40s and other lubricants...won't work...
and finally had to cut off that rim to get the wheel out...**** goes my old set of rims...could of sell them around 200...
I would never encourage to lock your wheel too tight...if it get rusted or cross threaded...your f@ucked!!

The weight of the car is supposed to rest on the hub, not the lugs. With the stock wheels, the crater inside the center of the wheel fits perfectly around the hub. With rotas, the inside is larger because they are not made specifically to fit your car. You need the spacer to get a proper fit.
good luck!

thank you all... and for those who were talking about the hubcentric ring.. that was exactly the problem. I bought these rims used from some guy with a 92 hatch... and i guess... the ring that was on there doesn't fit my car... ****, i didnt' even kno rims had these rings... so my rims never actually sat perfectly against my rotor... which caused my rims to spin crooked, and hence, snapped lots of Studs and caused my steering wheel to shake like a ****.. so i went and bought the correct hub ring.. and everything is fine now

Where'd you get the hub centric ring for the rota ?
