Curious guys is it ok to weld mild steel with 308 ss wire?

You can do it but if you want a clean weld you need to make sure that you have a good purge on the inside and outside of what you are welding. If you are welding a cage or something that the inside wont mader and wont be seen then a good purge on just the outside will be fine, but like I said the other side will look like **** but wont lack structural integrity. make sure you keep the purge for it to cool, like 5-10 seconds. Oxygen is bad for the SS process.

Why do you want to use SS rod anyway?

I would say it depends on the application. Anything structural, I wouldn't. Anything cosmetic, sure go ahead.

I find that when Tig welding mild steel exhausts I get better results using stainless filler as the mild steel exhaust tubing is generally cr@p and the stainless wire settles the weld pool down markedly.

If you're MIG and using SS wire, use stainshield gas.
