welding mild steel with 308 ss wire
You can do it but if you want a clean weld you need to make sure that you have a good purge on the inside and outside of what you are welding. If you are welding a cage or something that the inside wont mader and wont be seen then a good purge on just the outside will be fine, but like I said the other side will look like **** but wont lack structural integrity. make sure you keep the purge for it to cool, like 5-10 seconds. Oxygen is bad for the SS process.
Why do you want to use SS rod anyway?

I find that when Tig welding mild steel exhausts I get better results using stainless filler as the mild steel exhaust tubing is generally cr@p and the stainless wire settles the weld pool down markedly.
