Why would you leave your valves and valvetrain assembled during a head resurface? If any of that grit gets left behind on your valve seats or into your valve guides you're done for.

You could resurface the head with the springs installed, but since you got it off, you might as well completely rebuild it, ie new valve seals, valve job, thorough cleaning...

you can leaves the valves in......just make sure u get any metal flakes off, take the cam out of the head so none of the valves will be open, that way no metal shavings will get into the ports and the valves will sit low, use compresssed air to blow out all threw the springs etc, youll be fine , the machine shop will most likly do this anyway.... but really you should atleast clean up/lap the valves , new valve seals etc... you can buy head gasket kits that come with everything u need (head gasket, valves seals, manifold gaskets, valve cover gasket etc etc) for pretty cheap..... get a manual for your car, it will tell you how to take the head apart....you can even find these manuals online for free

Good luck.

Unless you are the incredible hulk, I doubt you will bend your valves just from handling them. you should replace your valve stem seals since you already have the head off, and like others said, get the valves cleaned up. My machinist only charges me $60 to regrind the 3 angles on the valve seats, media blast the valves clean and regrind the 45 degree angle on the valves and $25 to resurface the head. Then I put everything back together myself. Ask your machinist if he will do the same.

If you really really cant afford to get the head reconditioned, yes you can resurface the head with the valves installed.
Just be sure like, mentioned above, to clean the head really really well. Blow out all oil and coolant passages...
For less than $10, you can get a can of engine cleaner/degreaser and soak down the head ALL OVER and pressure wash the **** out of it at your local carwash. After all the grease and oil is removed, throw it in the dishwasher by itself.
