Well only a D16y8 really.

Maybe a D16Z6, but need new ecu and anything D15 with new ecu

That's the only engines thatll bolt into ur 97ex right now and run.

depends on what your gonna do with it
there are a jabillion arguments and debates on what motor is best
il break it down for you
D affordable but slow. with more $ it could be fast but only by forced induction or nos
B series there are a variety of these. get the vtec version and u can go inalot of directions with it.
H series is cheap but alot of torque . but you have to cut a hole for the shifter but you could do h2b h22 with a bseries tranny so you dnt have to cut a hole..but that h2b adapter alone is $1k
K series is nice. new engine, much improvement over B but its big $ but worth it
j series.....more weight. v6 alotttt of variations of the j series, some versions had 300hp stock , the most fabrication over other motors. and itl cost you too. to find the right one and then find a proper tranny then order the mounts and wiring for it..which is 45 million dollars

I see,is this also going to need modifications to the shifter console or just cutting the floor. Sorry to bother you I'm just trying to make sure I have everything like layed out so i can pick and choose. You dont have to make it any sort of special hole do you? can you just go at it with a air wheel or plasma cutter?

on the internet there are cutouts. its like a square you cutout and bolt in a shifter box for the cables. and then run cables to the tranny.
h2b is a good fast motor but the adapter is the downfall $1k.

I believe so but I'm not 100% sure. Also keep in mind, if you have AC and/or PS, you're not going to be able to easily keep them, if at all, with a decent amount of those swaps. The D and B series swaps won't be an issue with those.

Just boost your D, or get a LS or B20. You can go LSV or B20V later and make nice all motor power on the cheap.

a bigger motor is going to be the same as a boosted Dseries.

I'd also say if money's a little tight, an LS (B18B) isn't a bad choice, they can be picked up cheap. On paper the numbers might look a bit low but it makes a fun DD in the least. If you're building this for straight performance/track/etc however of course you'll probably want something a bit more, or boost the LS (low compression makes it easier). No variable timing is the downfall.

ya LS's are nice cuz of their low end TQ. I wish i had low end TQ on my Boosted D.

I have a Built D with Scat H-Beam Rods, YCP Vitara Pistons (STD), Klevite bearings, Honed, Weighted Balanced, 8lb Flywheel, Mated to a 99DX Tranny, in a 97 EX Coupe, Z6 head, Y8 Block, Y8 IM, Running 12-13PSI on a Ebay T3/T04E .63 A/R, I put down ~270WHP tuned on eCtune. Its pretty fast, and its not even close to being maxed out. I could upgrade to a 3-bar MAP and put it on 20PSI. The stock D series sleeves will handle 400WHP no problem (after that you risk it). I spent about 4K on the setup and thats only because the first time I had it swapped my "friends" did it and ****ed up so much stuff it ended up costing me extra, and then the motor blew up due to oil pump failure because of permatex red which we used on the headgasket (big mistake). Otherwise I was looking at ~2800. That also included swapping the car from auto to manual.
