Valve Questions
I picked up a GSR head with about 66k on it. I wasn't sure on the valve condition and decided to get them lapped(??) I guess. Took it to the machinist and he said all 8 of the intake valves were out of spec....is that possible for GSR valvetrain if it's been maintained well?
Now my main question is that I'm going to have to pick up a new set of valves and I'm deciding to go aftermarket(no brand decided yet); therefore, what type of valve procedures should be done for install??? Do the valves have to be refaced, lapped, or anything special, or should I just straight install them???
Should I get a 3-angle valve job done to brand new aftermarket valves?
I'm planning on a mild N/A setup with buddy club valvetrain possibly.

A three angle valve job is something done to the head where the valve seats not the valve itself. I would ask the machinist more questions. Like what exactly is out of spec.
I'll ask him more...but I'm not going to have him do it again because seriously think he screwed up the seat. After I dropped my head off to him, a few guys told me he wasn't very good with imports...he's more of a domestic machinist. I'm going to have NAPA do the install once I get the valves. As far as lapping, this is general question, should the valves be lapped generally or only during special occassions?
Lapping valves is really something you do yourself for a cheap rebuild, any decent machine shop wouldent mess around with lapping valves they would just cut new valve seats, Getting your valve seats recut is called a 3 angle valve job. the machine shop can also reface your old valves if they are in good shape. Since your head only has 66k on it they should be fine. I strongly suggest you have a 3 angle valve job and reface all your valves. If you just lap them in there is a possibility you could get burnt valves etc and have to take the head off and go threw the whole ordeal again.
Take the head to a decent machine shop have a 3 angle valve job performed and also have all the valves refaced, and dont forget to have the head resurfaced. You'll be happy you did.
Also make sure you have a healthy bottom end your putting the head on, you dont want to go threw all this to have a smoker. Also, make sure the deck surface is perfectly flat and smooth. Some say you really should have the block resurfaced aswell, seeing how these motors have Multi layer steel gaskets, this type of gasket needs a perfect surface to make a good seal. i have put them together without resurfaceing the block and it went well but if i was doing a b18c1 i wouldent mess around.
Hope this helps.

Since I'll be getting new valves, I can just go ahead and drop the head off and have them do the work while I wait for my valves to come in. I'll install them myself. Brand new valves dont have to have anything done to them right??
You need to have the valves you are going to be using while doing the valve job. The purpose of two of the angles in a 3 angle valve job is to locate the valve seat properly onto the valve face so it doesn't ride off the edge.
Just do it right the first time! give the bare head along with your new valvtrain to the machine shop and have them do a 3 angle vj install new valve seals! along with the valve springs and retainers the keapers you can reuse. if your doing a mild n.a build go with high compression flat face valves!! to bump the compression to help squeze power.
