b17 start up question
Ok so I am building a B16 block up with a b17 crank, Crower b17 rods and SRP 10.5 CR / 81mm pistons. The head will remain stock b16 with the exception of GSR(1.8) cams going in. I will be using an OE 3 layer head gasket. Toda header and CAI. This is a very mild street build.
My question is in regard to what I should do for start up and short term break in on the ECU end of things. I am having a hard time finding a good shop in my area to get a tune and it looks like my best bet is going to be to drive or transport the car 700 miles to a shop I know I can trust.
I have a virgin p30 and a virgin p61. I am going to have to base start up tuning off of the stock maps on one of those and simply adjust fuel pressure and timing until I can get it tuned. Should I use the P30 or the P61 as a starting point ? What base fuel pressure would be best to run ? What base timing would be best to run ? Or should I use an S300 (was going to be installed when tuned but can get and install early) and use a map for something else ? I was thinking maybe a 1.8 GSR map would work out ok.
Thanks in advance.

haha.. Yeah just a little bit. This motor is going in my daily driver so I want to make sure it is spot on. Measure twice cut once sort of thing. I have my own ideas but wanted to get a second opinion before I did anything. Any words of wisdom ?

stick with OEM parts mostly inside. like pistons, bearings and rings. SRP is junk and you would be better off with OEm pr3 pistons that would give you about the same compression and last much longer with out all the oil consumption. i cant recall anyone ever getting 100k + miles from forged aftermarket pistons. but i can recall more cases that i can count with people getting 100k+ miles from OEM pistons. follow the factory service manual also. going off in your own random direction generally leads to failure.
Thanks. The only reason I was going with that piston/rod setup in the first place was because I was able to get a good deal on a set. But as luck would have it, I just had a set of OE B17 rods fall into my lap today. OE rods and pr3s it is. And in regard to the start up tune, common sence tells me the stock p61 should do the trick. Logic being that the lower compession b17 responds pretty well to aggessive timing, so with the higher compression and timing to factory spec I should be just fine.
if you just have the compression increase and a few other bolt on's the oem ecu will get you to the dyno for a tune. just set the timing to stock and the fpr to a few more than OEM specs and you will be fine. the oem ecu is pretty conservative on timing and liberal on fuel. a good combo for safety
Thanks. Thats whats I was thinking. I was just having one of those moments where you know something is right, but you start to second guess it and next thing you know you are sitting around trying to re-invent the wheel. Thanks again.
