Default power to manual locks

I don't really like power options.. especially on a car that is nearly 20 years old. The locks act really funny and refuse to work as they should. Simple question, on a car with power locks (EX) are the rods still in place from the lock cylinder?? or is there no mechanical connection, ie only solenoids and actuators?? thanks.

I had both manual then converted to power locks on my EG hatch, and either way the rod is on the cylinder.
