A charcoal canister is used to trap the fuel vapors. The fuel vapors adhere to the charcoal, until the engine is started, and engine vacuum can be used to draw the vapors into the engine, so that they can be burned along with the fuel/air mixture.
wow. thx, i honestly didnt know wut that was for. ive seen some cars without this canister, did those cars just "tuck" this part away or remove it completely? would removing this part affect my car in a bad manner?
if you're remaining OBD2, keep it or you'll be throwing CELs left and right.
the canister itself is part of the evaporative emissions system (not performance related in anyway) without it vapors from the fuel tank will be vented to the atmosphere.
If you're running OBD1, and have no need or desire to ever return to OBD2, it can be removed if you really want to.

And make sure the car never has to pass emissions ever again. People who turbo and convert to OBD-1 and then sweat it out when it comes time to renew their registration for their street car get laughed at.
