Default JDM DOHC ZC.

**TOPIC SEARCHED**

Have a couple questions about this motor..

Just bought a '90 crx si with dohc zc swapped into it. I have plans of swapping it out for another b or d series motor floatin around. As far as the zc goes thats in it already, it is a fairly "fresh" motor.. Guy i bought it from recently rebuilt the top end (belts, timing belt, water pump, seals etc.) Plans for this car are leaning towards show..

Questions i have are:

1. Are there any realistic upgrades i could do to this motor?
2. Is it worth keeping in? (parts hard to find, common problems etc.)
3. Could i expect any power from it? lol

Any info would be great

upgrades depend on your goals.

if you want a good reliable motor just run it the way it is.

if you want power, turbo
and if you want under 200whp no need to rebuild.

so you first need to know how much power you want.

my dohc zc has been turbo'd since 1999 when i swapped it in, never rebuilt

well.. im not lookin into makin the zc a super steamy race motor. Just want somethin that could make sufficient/decent power with. I was thinkin goin down the boosted route but a buddy told me it wouldnt be worth in a dohc zc since its obd0.. tuning purposes?

easy to convert it to OBD1 - just need OBD0 to OBD1 ECU jumper, OBD1 ECU and OBD1 TD43U distributor

i ran 7 psi on stock internals with 450 dsm blue top injectors, on obdo the problem is u must get a rare 0bd0 si ecu and get it chipped which gets spendy.
i had it in a ef hatch it straight dipped car was hella fast till i sold it, or convert it to 0bd1 like he was saying those distributers are uber rare though and cost alot unless u get lucky, when u buy the jdm motor some times it comes with the 0bd1 dissy hope this is helpful....

Thanks for the info sparrky.

As far as upgrades, the zc is already sportin a header... thats the main bolt on it has for the moment. I might end up getting some sort of air intake for it but i dont want to get rid of my stock air box

i too have this motor, in a 90 si hatch. i think its great. has tri-y header and intake. but the head was worked on a bit with mild cams upgraded springs and retainers port matching and the throtle body and intake mani have been slighty bored. it pulls on my buddys b16 and with two crappy drivers myself included about a 10th off a basicly stock gsr. im also running a crx si trans. but it is way more fun to drive than my '00 gsr. i love this motor i say keep it dont do the swap. plus if you are handy its relatively easy to make ITB's for it, back yard style

well the head was sent to JGengine dynamics, for the work. they used their custom regrinds, stock valves and their dual springs and chromoly retainers, as well as mildly ported and polished the head. i think most guys are boosting theirs but i like it N/A. and like i said i have an ITB set up using CBR1000 throttle bodys and a modified intake manifold. its not on the car yet as i still need a couple things first. but i think you will really enjoy the ZC however you mechanically tune it or boost it. this is my first one so i'm definately not the authority, but i believe it was said before go to www.thezcr.com the people there will help you alot more than i can. good luck!

Thanks for all the info! Like i stated above^^ Im not sure if I'd want to boost the zc knowing its obd0. I like the sounds of goin for an N/A build(nothing serious) Seems alot healthier for the motor itself too. I will gather more info as time goes but for now im thinkin of just leaving it the way it is.

both are old cars though, well i ran a chipped and socketed pm6 on both cars, they were ran on basemaps, never had them fully tuned, they both ran on no more than 10 psi both motors were stock internals ran great both daily drivers, the problem is u have to have uberdata or a old program that works with obdo basemaps no one around here has this any more its to old of a program, so i had fun tracking some one down that was ligit and good....

convert it to obd1 if u wanna turbo it. the distributor isnt that hard to find or very expensive. goto tigerjapanese.com and when i got mine i think it was 115.00 shipped. had it in 3 days no problems with it. they are brand new not remanufactured from what i remember, and i even ran on an obd1 ls ecu untill i got tuned. worked fine. still does
