my dad used an HVLP gun to paint my car used rustoleum but used paint thinner instead of mineral spirits(first mistake). then there were runs in the clearcoat, so today i used the razor blade trick to get them smooth. i used 1000, 1500, then 2000 sandpape rand made sure not to sand through the clear. I then used turtle wax polishing compound nd an electric buffer to get the shine back, and there was ZERO SHINE! looked like my frineds 20 year old factory paint. I spray bombed over it and honestly the spray bombed are looks better than the whole car....should I just spray bomb the whole car?

 

i dont think u supposed to use wax on fresh painted car... You need buffing compound from 3M.

 

Probably because you used shitty compound and the wrong pad/etc... possibly.

What type of pad was used on the buffer? What RPM on the buffer? Turtle wax polishing compound isnt something i'd be using trying to get paint to look decent, if you wetsanded completely and were ready to buff, i'd be using something like meg's M105 on a orange pad to start with. That should bring back most of it before finishing it off with a polish and sealant/wax.

 

you burnt thought the clear and flatten the paint. Repaint and clear wait at lest 2 days before buffing compound and 30days for wax. Make sure to go slow and watch it so you dont burn thought the clear again

 

what weird is it was even duller with wax and buffing than my tremclad on my hood which wasnt cleared, just the single stage...

should i be using a foam or cloth pad?

 

So i tried a RUBBING compund followed by a polishing compund on the same area as yesterday and an area I havent touched yet. The area i did yesterday I used shop towels and elbow grease, rubbing compund first, then polishing, came out alright, but still very flat looking and you can see swirl marks everywhere. This is where I sanded the clear with 2000 grit (it was all flat black looking after i sanded it, but glass smooth), so that attempt failed


so i tried in an area where there was no clear, just gloss blck tremclad (rusto). Ive heard of guys buffing thsi stuff and getting great results. Mine sucked, felt nicer to the touch but there werre swirl marks EVERYWHERE!. On this area i used a simoniz random orbit dual action waxer/polisher


arggh, my paint is ****ed either way so I guess I will have to repaint (probably just spray bomb) but how can i smooth it out after and give it a deep shine like this?!

 

to get a shine like that use automotive paint. once the paint dries wetsand it up to 2000 or 3000 grit and use rubbing compound.

 

if you want a good shine like that then save the cash and get a real paint job.

 

hmm...damn lol. Alright guess Im going to do peice by peice spray bomb as temporary fix

go buy a $40 pneumatic da sander from pepboys and as much sanding disks as you can and go to town. start over. use legit paint this time. rustoleum paintjobs ftl

I think that what you did wrong, i guess...I have that same machine you have. What kind simoniz machine you used? I have the smaller ones. If you want a shine like that then you need to wet it down after clear coat. Using a 2000 sanding paper and mist water. Then after cleaning it. You use the compound and machine foam. Someone told me you don't need to spend $100 on orbit dual action to polish to get good results but i think spend a good buck on machine might get result. Just my opinion...

 

you gotta use a machine buffer with a quality pad not the foam one. your elbow grease is real weak.. Trust me on this one use rubbing compound plus machine. Pick up the 30 dollar buffer at harbor frieghts and a new buffing pad they have. Your paint can still be saved
