Default TERRRRRBOOOOWWWWW completed, pics inside..and a few Q's...

Whelp, got her done today. About a 15 hr install time (1st time, 1/2 of it in the dark in the dirt), but she's done right...and running good:

Only a couple right now. I'll get some more later.

Now, for the questions/concerns:

1. Holding boost. I have the wastegate set to about 8 pounds right now...but it only gets up to about 6 for some reason. It will get to 6, and just barely start to lose it after about 5-6 seconds of full boost. Is this normal? I checked all my charge pipes, and everything is connected tight.

2. BOV. This thing is QUIET. Is there any way I can make it louder? Here's a pic of it (It's old skool...but came welded on the kit already when I bought it):

On my intake mani, I have it connected to the back, on the left. Is there a better place I should have it connected to?

3. Plugs, which ones should I use? (ZC w/Greddy TD04H kit). I was using NGK BKR6E-11's on my B16a, and they were pretty cold (for the N2o)... Should I be using those on this one too?

4. Timing, what should it be at? Right now I have it at stock (As close as possible, I think). What should it be set at?

Thanks guys,

jB

BTW, does anyone have any maintenance/troubleshooting tips? EVERY freaking rattle, knock, thud, bump, etc is freaking me out... What should I be listening/looking for to make sure I'm not detonating the hell out of the engine and not knowing it?

do you have the vacumm hose from the wastegate going to the turbo, or to an intake mani. source? if its to the turbo thats why your not getting the full 8 psi

It's an internal wastegate, so the vacuum from it is going right to the turbo under it. Should I move it to the intake manifold somewhere?

That looks good as hell dude...hows she running? How do you like it compared to the b16? What kind of fuel manaement and ignition are you running? Unfortunately there isnt too much you can do to make he BOV louder...except to buy an RFL of course I would run a line to the intake maifold like TenaciousC said to reach the full 8 pounds. Keep us posted on track times and any misc. kills you might get....especially mustangs(they always f*ck with me for some reason). I give you on the clean @$$ install.

Thanks guys.

Whelp, I had my first mishap... I connected the WG to the manifold, and it freakin pulled like a **** compared to having it to the turbo.

I pulled on to my street, and the charge pipe coming right off the turbo slid off. So I'm going back up under there to screw it on tighter.

Another question.. Why doesn't it blow off when I just rev the engine? I hear a lot of people just rev and blow off really loud... Is this dependent on the BOV or what?

You won't build much boost unless the engine is under load, just reving it doesn't build much boost if any at all, hence not much noise from the BOV.

I had the same setup as you with the TDO4H turbo on a ZC, Then I put a B18B in with the same turbo. It ran much better then My current T3/T4 setup. As far as the not blowing off when reving up. I had the same thing with mine. there isn't anything wrong just that your turbo doesn't spool like alot of cars with stock turbo's...Hell My friends Saab would hit 5 psi just reving .LOL

What are you using for tuning a FMU? Are those plugs one stage colder then stock? That is what you need.

you could of done better with the intercooler piping.. but other than that its tight.... need to get some electronics so you can bring it over and strap it to the dyno, then let me drive it at hte track

some pressure is lost in the intercooler. if your gauge is hooked up after that (as it should be) it'll be showing less, because of the drop. My wastegate is set to about 7psi, but I only see 6 on the gauge.

Yeah, sorry about that.

The FMIC piping is FKed up. I didn't think it was going to be anywhere near that low, but that's the ONLY place I could fit it for the time being. That is the old bumper w/ the bottom cut out of it. I wanted to test it out and see how it looked b4 I started cutting on the new one.

As far as last night... I checked my oil levels b4 I headed over to my friends house. We went to leave, and the charge pipe coming off the turbo came off...so we had to turn around, come home, and fix it. We got done w/ that about 8:45, and went to get to his house (BTW, I burned the **** out of myself (Check Pic) on the exhaust manifold, along w/ the turbo housing, and the block, and the tranny, and the radiator... It wasn't fun. We finally got that done and headed over to his house to get ready to head up to the meet. We got there, and I didn't let the car sit (No Timer either)... I waited about 15mins while he got dressed and went to go leave. We went back out, and I looked under the car, and I see a puddle...and oil dripping off my charge pipe... and I'm like F*$& DA*$ MOTHERFU$*%( PIECE OF MOTHERFU$(*% SH*$%. I checked the dipstick, and NOTHING. I popped off the oil cap, and white smoke was coming out. Right about this point my heart starts beating fast, and I swoon (Not really, but I'm melodramatic about situations like this). I stick about 3/4 of a quart in her, and check it again. I can barely see anything on the dipstick. Maybe about 1/2 centimeter on the bottom.

Soooooo, needless to say, I wasn't going to be driving her anywhere until I got her fixed. We got a couple of movies, and chilled at his place. I got up this morning and went to check her again. Guess what....Yeah, I'm a Polock... It's 3/4 quart overfilled now. All of the oil drained back down in overnight, and it was fine.

I do have a small leak though, coming off the inlet on the turbo housing. It's right where the 2 washers are where it goes right in to the turbo. I'm going to have to take it off tomorrow or Tuesday and put some new washers and sealent on there.

I do have a couple more questions though:

1. BOV vacuum hose, where should I put it. Right now I have the WG and Boost Guage going in to the intake mani, and that's it for the extra spots. I tried T'ing it off each of those, and it sucked. I also tried T'ing it off the hose that goes to the little idle solenoid, but the idle says up I guess cuz of the T. Right now I have teh BOV going in to the intake (At the end, right near the TB). Is this okay, or should I move it? I didn't know if it detected vacuum (That's what I think, but not sure) or Pressure (So when I close the TB, it senses the vacuum in the intake line and blows off, instead of reading the vacuum in the intake mani when no more compressed air is being shoved in to it from the turbo). Jan I tried the brake booster, but got the wrong T, so I'll have to wait for tomorrow to try that

2. The WG. I have it going in to the back of the intake manifold, is there a better place to put it?

3. The little nipple on the turbo. I had the WG there, but I could never reach full psi, and still can't (See below). Should anything be connected to this, or just plug it off?

4. Pressure. I have the WG (internal) screwed down to 8 psi; however, I can't get that high for some reason. @ about 6k in 3rd, I only get up to about 6 and then it starts to let off a little bit. It can hold the boost for a few secs, then goes down just a little bit b4 I shift.

5. The MAP sensor. I'm using the overwhelmingly sophisticated (sarcasm) check valves system. I'm not getting any CEL's, but I do have a small miss in my idle and when I hold it at about 3k. Would this be because of the MAP sensor having a small leak in any of the lines, or something else?

So far she is freaking awesome. MUCH faster than my B16, and I think even a little faster than the B16 w/N2o. As far as electronics, I am going to be getting my Oil Pres & A/F guages in this week, and hopefully the SAFC w/ DSM injectors in a couple. I am running a Vortech 12:1 FMU right now...and HOLY CRAP this thing dumps a lot of fuel. Going down the road today I started smelling fuel and come to my surprise, I'm leaving a trail of it behind my car. Turns out that the return going from the FPR to the FMU blew off, and whelp...my engine bay was totally drenched. Got some new hose and a few different clamps from Peppy Boys, and fixed her right up. Other than that, no other problems...

Thanks for all your help guys.

Also, please correct me on this...but. At the turbo, it's really boosting the 8psi I have it set to...but once it goes through all the pipes, it get to the TB and only has about 7 right? So if I hook the BOV up to the nipple coming off the turbo, when it blows off wouldn't it be louder since the air is compressed higher right there and would set it off instantly? For some reason, I can't hear my BOV at all. I hear the WG go chssssshhhhh, chsssshhhhhh, chsssshhhh down when I let off. It doesn't sound like the chirp or PSHHHHH I hear from most of them, more of like a stepping down of releasing air. I heard the same thing from a GNX @ the track w/ no BOV...

BTW, this is what happend when you try to reattach the charge pipe to the turbo, w/o letting the car cool down:

about it not reaching full boost, my greddy turbo did the same thing when i tried putting it at 8 psi. what i did is turn it just a little bit more and it goes to like 8.5 try that and see if it reaches full boost.

i have that same shitty blow off valve. there is no way to make it louder believe me i've tried. but it does get pretty loud when i let off at 10 psi. i kinda like it though because its not loud and annoying.

haha, i burn my hand like that all the time........

What FMIC is that? Greddy Type24? Although its functional, Why didnt you opt for the straight in straight out design? Did you already have that FMIC lying around?

The MAP as well as all the rest of the sensors are very susceptable to voltage changes through improper grounding. I know on the B-series engines that there is a grounding point for the ECU/wiring harness at the Thermostat(10mm bolt). I was having idle problems, and I went through and cleaned up all the grounding points in the engine bay and it cured my problem. Try that, maybe it'll work for you.

I bought the turbo kit w/ the intercooler. I am looking to ge ta straight through one. This one works great, but is just a PITA getting around my crossmember to mount it correctly.

Speed, thanks for the info. I'll check it all out again tonight when I go to put everything back together.

Get rid of that blowoff valve. Your boost is bleeding out of that blowoff valve. I had the same one on my Buick GN and couldn't figure it out for months why my boost would drop off. To check it out, open the blowoff valve take out the spring and fill it up with something solid that can't compress (ie: pennies). That way it can't bleed off your boost by opening up when boosting. After I found that problem with mine I took it off and threw that mah ***** in the trash. I'd highly suggest you do the same. I can guarrantee thats the same problem you are having. You will notice it more when you try to increase the boost. Try it out and holla back.
