Default possible spark/timing problem

i read everything about this problem to check and just wanted to throw a question out there...friend of mine bought an 89 si with MSD bullshit on it and it was running like ****, so i pulled all the msd stuff off put the stock coil and cap back on tightened the rotor screw up put a ground on the trans cuz there wasnt one started it up and it ran AWESOME. perfect no missing no sputtering ran great pulled hard...so we took it for a drive i pulled out went through first, second stopped at a stop sign gave it a little gas to take off and it bogged and died i tried to start it back up and nothing...getting plenty of fuel u can smell it and its priming, put another coil in it still nothing...just trying to get some ideas of what could have happened that quickly?? if it jumped time would it still start just run terribly?? any info would be appreciated so when i go back to his house i can get her going thanks everyone
