B16 swap
I have a 97 del sol si and I want to put in a b16. First off when looking for the b16 does it matter whether its like the b16a or b16a2 for example. I know there is some slight differences but is there a preferred choice. Also I will need the transmission and ecu correct because the b series motor won't match up to my current d series tranny. Also how will the fit work will it be a hard swap or what?
look...alot of people on here will not answer these types of questions b/c you can search and find them all day. this swap has been done many times. yes the b16 will fit correctly in there. your car is OBD2...i think your best bet is to get the motor out of 99-00 civic Si. (USDM B16a2) Those are OBD2 and all should plug right up. of course you have to get the B tranny. The swap is not hard at all...just a drop in swap. use the b16 ecu. there may be a few misc. parts along the way but nothing big.
It also depends on what u have planned for the future on the motor... Where u live and if they have emissions test... And how much u have to spend. I did a JDM 92-95 B16A SiR2 on my 96 Civic Coupe. And i love it. Yeah its a OBD1 but when it comes time to tune it... OBD1 is tuner friendly, OBD2 throws a CEL. I got mine from hmotorsonline.com for about $2250. And it came with...
- Motor
- Hydraulic Tranny (S21, Y21)
- ECU (P30)
- Axles with Half Shaft
- Shift Linkage
- Stock Motor Mounts *
- Alternator
- Starter
- Clutch
- Flywheel
- Intake Manifold
- Exhaust Manifold
- Fuel Rail
- Injectors
- Distributor
- Engine Harness
- Comes With All Sensors Needed
- LSD Tranny (Optional +$300)
U will need to get is a OBD2 to OBD1 harness. They give u a warranty and the rear motor mount if u need it. Here is the pics of mine when i recvd it and after it was installed...

Hoped this help ur decission.

Its a lot easier to use an OBD2 engine in an OBD2 vehicle and just run a jumper harness and an OBD1 ECU, eliminates any cutting and splicing for the alternator, distributor and injector plugs.

I'm not tryin to sell the guy on a B16A over the B16A2.. but more or less tell him my experience with the engine i got, what it came with and the price i paid. It doesnt matter which engine he goes with, he will have to mod something... Either the ECU or harness. He's going from SOHC to DOHC. Everyone is correct... it's just depends on what he perfers and who is doing the install and their knowledge of a swap. Here are some numbers and what cars they was used in for the two engine.

So as u can see the del sol was sold with both engines, just not in the US. The USDM was the B16A3. So he can go by a local junk yard, find a 1994-1995 Del Sol VTEC with a B16A3 since its a OBD1, and part it out. Or go to 1996-1997 Del Sol VTEC which came with a B16A2 since it came with a OBD2, and part it out.
To be honest his question was what the difference between B16A and a B16A2... to answer his question look at the numbers and then decide on how much patients you have, especially if u never did a swap. And of course how much ur tryin to send. Neither engine will be PnP. But remember ur car has the option for a B16A2.

Currently i only have 1700 dollars but am still saving and would you recommend to go with the jdm or usdm motor? Also do the b18 engines fit without having to do fabrication to the engine compartment and if so what exactly would have to be done?
any B series will fit into your del sol, there is a list above of what you will need, as far as linkage is concerned you MUST use the linkage from a del sol VTEC model, thats is specific for the b swap, any b series transmission will bolt up to any b series motor, but in your case make sure it is a hydro transmission and not a cable transmission. a GSR, Type r, or SI transmission would suit you best because the short gearing will allow you to accelerate more rapidly, if your in a bind and just want to get it running an LS transmission will work, but your car wont have the same performance that it would with the aforementioned transmissions. It is also wise to throw B series mounts into the car and not use the D series.
It also depends on what u have planned for the future on the motor... Where u live and if they have emissions test... And how much u have to spend. I did a JDM 92-95 B16A SiR2 on my 96 Civic Coupe. eh off topic but was just wondering.
i've recently swaped my em1 to a jdm 2nd gen b16a with p30 ecu.
wondering when does your vtec kick!.
is it loud and can you actually hear it over the exhaust?

I found this on hmotorsonline.com and if i bought this it would fit in my del sol without any major problems. Also does anyone know if it is the 96-97 spec or the 98 spec+

like since 1983 said... you can go wit any b series motor. i would keep it either b16 or b18 though. As far as going jdm b16 it all comes down to emissions test. Since your car is a obd2 some states will frown upon you switching to a obd1. I live in tennesse and dont have to worry about it. If u save up and get the complete swap from a good company, they usually come with the mounts, axles, ecu, and shift linkage. But make sure u let them know u need shift linkage for a del sol. If they dont carry the correct shift linkage then just get one from ur local auto parts store, honda dealership or online. Look for shift linkage off a 96-97 del sol vtec with the b16a2.

Yeah that would be a sweet setup. I would say get headers though. They have two different specs for the engine but u would get the same stuff. The price difference just means the 98+ engine will have more hp & torque.

mine kicks in at around 5-5.5... yeah its loud as ssh!t. Im runnin Skunk2 full exhaust which isnt loud until the vtec kicks in but the vtec is still loud if not louder. Make sure who ever wired ur care did it right and all ur sensors work.
maybe because my window was shut. idk i'll drive it again and see if i can hear the Vtec
I also have one more question dealing with the difference of b16 vs. b18. because the del sol came with a b16 at one point i know i can find parts like headers, intakes, exhausts, etc. but with the b18 will i be able to find parts like this for the del sol or will i have to get special custom parts?

The intake from either engine will work as long as its a short ram. for a cold air intake u would need to use a b16 cold air intake system.
for the exhaust just use any catback for a b16 delsol vtec and it will work on both engines.
hopefully this will help. if u have any other questions it might be a couple of weeks till i can get back to u.
