NO VTEC??
I have a fully built d16z6 motor with a go autoworks turbo kit car has s100, just got put together and ready for tune but has no vtec whats the problem?I was told i could have a drop in oil press or clean out the screen on the vtec solenoid.. what u guys think?? Thanks!
yeah you should defintately check the oil and the oil pressure. but you can also check your vtec solenoid and see it the screen is dirty.. wouldn't hurt to clean it.
Did you break everything in before you beat on it? If you just put it together you shouldn't see what she's got right away. Are you sure there's enough oil for both the turbo and the vtec? good luck

For OBDI Civics, can you list CEL codes that do and don't prevent VTEC engagement?
The more important point is that if you lack VTEC and have a CEL, the first step is to fix the CEL as it is likely responsible for preventing VTEC engagement. In support of this idea, I refer you to this Honda-tech thread entitled "The Official "Why VTEC doesn't Engage" Thread".
If the ECU fails to receive a tachometer signal, VTEC will be unable to engage but no CEL will be thrown.

I'm not just talking about OBD1 (your post didn't differentiate either). Most CELs on most Hondas will not cause VTEC to not engage. There are plenty of CELs that are common and won't affect VTEC at all.
I don't want anyone misled into thinking that since they have a CEL, they have more problems than just what that CEL indicates. An O2 sensor, knock sensor or fuel pressure CEL (for example, some of the most common codes) won't cause VTEC not to engage.
This thread could easily be found by people in the future who don't know what vehicle you're talking about since no one expressly mentioned OBD1.
Can you think of any other reason one would not have a CEL (besides no CEL light) but would not have VTEC working? This would probably be the thread to mention them in.

x2. Are there any check engine lights on? if not, then how would you know your engaged in vtec? Isnt it easier to tell with an n/a motor instead of a FI? other questions like is it properly tuned? you say your using s100 with what ecu?
For a fully built motor you should have a Oil Pressure gauge for sure. Advance Auto sells them for $18. Its def worth it. I blew my first built D because the Oil goup got clogged up and I had nothing to tell me otherwise. By the time i knew it was too late. It spun all 4 bearings..
