Pros/cons of the S2000.
Hello everyone. I have been thinking for quite some time about selling my TSX and getting an S2000. I'm looking for an 06+ since mine is an 08, so I think I could get atleast an 06 with the money I got from the TSX. Obviously going from a sedan to a 2 door would be a drastic change, but at this point in my life I don't really think I need the other 2 seats. What's a good price for a <30k bone stock S2k? What are the major pros and cons of the 06+? I've heard from my friend that S2000's never had a OEM hardtop from the factory. Is this true? I would love to have a hard-top version, but I don't want to spend the $2k+ to get one.
From the FAQ thread at the top of the page:
Biggest thing to take from that is the drive by wire (DBW). Do some research and decide if that matters to you.
Also traction control(VSA) which you can turn off.
The hardtop is a factory option, you buy it from honda or aftermarket sources. It's detachable, meaning that you can put it on/off and keep the soft top folded down under it.
It depends on your lifestyle, but it's not the most practical car if you're aiming for it to be your only car. Look around at all the different threads on daily driving and try to make a decision for yourself based on you.
Model Year 2006
The 39th Tokyo Motor Show, held from October 22 to November 6, 2005, at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, had dozens of cars and motorcycles on display, but it is the new S2000, equipped with even more advanced features than ever before, that shared the Motor Sports Zone stage with a rare close-up look at Honda’s F1 and IndyCar Series racers.
• MSRP increased to $34,050 and shipping to $550 for a total of $34,600.
• Drive-By-Wire Throttle System. Use a computer sensor to input throttle as opposed to pulling on the throttle cable
• Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control. A combination of computer controlled throttle and individual wheel braking to control sudden changes in vehicle behavior. VSA has a turn-off switch where the defrost button (moved) used to be.
• 20 lbs heavier
• Redesigned road wheels
• Redesigned steering wheel
• New color, Laguna Blue
• Daytime running lights (DRL)
• Brake Assist, which helps drivers apply full braking pressure in an accident avoidance situation via the ABS actuator. Braking pressure is maintained momentarily after the driver's initial braking action to help the driver stop promptly. It deactivates when the driver releases pressure on the brake pedal
• Basic warranty is 3 year/36,000 but the power train was extended to 5 years/60,000 mile
• Exterior temperature gauge
• New seats; they no longer have seat back pocket and headrest speaker system is gone
• 4 of the 8 speaker audio system are integrated roll bar speakers
• Sebring silver and white only come with a black interior
• CARB emissions rating is now LEV-2
• Passenger-side airbag cutoff
• IAC Valve has been eliminated, along with the cruise control hardware; it is all controlled by the ECU for the DBW system. A gas pedal cable runs into the engine compartment to an actuator. From there it's electronic.
• New intake manifold, intake support bracket, and injector cover
• Only one cam sensor
• New style map sensor
• IAT sensor has moved to the rubber intake tract
• Differential now has a breather box mounted behind it
• Fuel line at engine is now a quick-release type
• Air pump, associated lines and control valve, have been eliminated
• Weight/and or/position sensors mounted in the seats
• Fan switch in the radiator has been replaced with a second CTS, in turn the fans are now computer controlled
• HO2S in the header is now referred to as an Air fuel ratio sensor
• If you leave the gas cap loose, you'll get a "CHECK GAS CAP" warning, displayed in the outside temp display
• NOT SURE ON THIS: In Europe they are advertising a new three-part speedster cover. The cover fits over the folded hood and features a pair of raised domes that sweep back from the two headrests/rollover bars to provide a distinctive look reminiscent of many classic sports cars.
• HP is now stated at 237 - due to the auto industry wide change in how HP is calculated**
** New Horsepower Ratings to Level the Field in Performance
The Society of Automotive Engineers has standardized a horsepower measuring system, requiring several automakers to take a critical look at their more subjective output assertions. Toyota and Honda, in particular, have had to downgrade the horsepower ratings of some of their vehicles from the 2005 to 2006 model years as a result of this new system. Even though it features the same 3.0-liter V6 engine, the Toyota Camry has seen its output rating reduced in one model year from 210 to 190 horsepower. As the Detroit News notes, though, the new SAE horsepower standards have worked in favor of some companies — such as GM, which was able to boost the horsepower rating of the Northstar V8 in the Cadillac STS-V from 440 to 469 horsepower. All automakers are expected to eventually comply with these ratings, and American manufacturers, such as Ford and DaimlerChrysler, already have plans to incorporate the SAE standards into tests of vehicles scheduled to receive new powertrains. What this means to you: More accurate horsepower ratings mean more accurate comparisons between cars from all part of the world. The new rating is done with the accessories at load. Honda probably knew this in MY2004 and just under-rated the 2004 so it would not go down by much in 2006. That said, the S2000 loses less under the new rating compared to some other Hondas as it has a smaller AC compressor, has EPS, and a smaller alternator than most other Hondas to draw on the engine under load.

The TSX has DBW and VSA so I already know how that stupid stuff works. It would more than likely be my only car until I can get a nice beater. I've heard that you really can't recline the seats that much. How much are we talking about? Are you pretty much sitting straight up?
Depends on how tall you are. I'm 6'3" so in order to fit my big *** legs in I have to put the seat all the way back on the seat rails....so I can't recline at all. If you're shorter you can move the seat up a bit, and then have some room to recline but not much.
Your best bet is to go sit in one and test drive it.
I've daily diven mine for 6 months now, and in all honesty I can't wait to get a beater. It's totally doable, but after a while you just wish you had more room sometimes.
Still for everytime that I want to complain about it being too small, I find a sharp bend in the road and any doubt I had goes right away. It's a very very fun car to drive.

pro's, only 2 seats so you dont have to tote everyone you know around
its small so you dont have to/can't carry a bunch of **** and have a good excuse not to
cons.. see above..
lol thats the best way i can put it.
I have had mine about a month, put around 5000 miles on it and havent regretted it one bit. I replaced my 4dr gsr with the S.
I'm on the shorter side, around 5,8 and i fit perfectly, i have plenty of room to recline the seat or move it wherever i want. Normally i have about 2 inches between the seat and the roll hoops

fast95se said it perfectly. I daily drove my S for the first 8 months but then 2 months ago I had to buy a DD. Just like he said, it's totally doable, afterall i did it for almost a year, but eventually you want/need more room for groceries, toys, golf bag, etc. Plus I wanted to keep my S in pristine condition so a DD was the way to go.
I'm only 5'9" 170pounds and I feel that this car would be too small if i was ANY bigger. I know many people will disagree cuz there are 6ft+ guys here who drive their S daily with no problems. I'm even considering adding the Mugen seat rail to lower the seat 1". But again this is all MY PREFERENCE, I don't like it TOO cramped.
BTW, only the S2000 CR trim comes with a hardtop, but does not have option of soft top.

Thanks for the info guys. Would the OEM hardtop be a good modification to get if I had the money? I've heard a lot of horror stories about the soft-top wearing pretty badly over time.
x10!

If you fit fine then why wouldn't you want to daily it? I have no problem dailying my S because of my size. If i was any bigger, I would have a problem dailying it. That was my point.
Sorry to hear about your stolen Integra. I'm worried mine is gonna get jacked since tegs are so popular amongst car thieves.

The car was bought to be a weekend car only and driving it everyday takes away from the enjoyment of only driving it on the weekends. Sort of like having sex or cocaine everyday gets old after awhile
pros: has the largest '***** magnet' i have ever seen in a car. it almost is the size of the vehicle itself
cons: cannot put more than 2 supermodels (see pros)in the passenger seat.

space is fine (unless you are used to driving boats). we go grocery shopping (for the 2 of us) to costco, raleys, and another grocery store without any problems. fitting costco stuff is like tetris though. im 6'1" 160 Ibs and got a fixed bucket seat, that helped tons with headroom. car is roomy for what it is, a roadster. i have DD'd mine for 7 months without really any issues.
