you can't be serious? Totally different viscosity -- I mean, it 'might' work in a do or die situation, but why would you?

it would work but I would not suggest it. Transmission oil has its own viscosity. Its usually much thicker than motor oil can be. For example 5w-30 for motor oil and 50w-75 for Manual Transmission Oil.

*facepalm* uh yea 10w-30 is what you're supposed to use in many manual trannys. virtually all honda trannys that i'm aware of.

one example here, caption courtesy of ALLDATA.

Why not buy a service manual? Honda ones are nice or I'm sure Haynes/Chilton will do.

yes you can use 10w-30 for your trans. I do in mine and some friends do in theirs with no problems at all.

Find the factory service manual online. A couple places have it for download and it'd answer both of your questions. Asking a message board is sometimes risky because of people like this:

I think your thinking about gear oil for a rear diff this will destroy a manual transmission way to thick!

yes u can use motor oil in a transmission. in fact almost all of the honda manuals have a recomended oil viscosity for transmissions. example, in my honda manual it said if u dont use tranny lube then use 10w-40.

An oil made for manual transimissions is probably better but motor oil is OK. That's what Honda calls for on my old stuff, so no big deal, use whichever you have.

You are talking about manual trannys aren't you?

10w30 will be just fine

Although if paying more money for "mtf" will help you sleep at night, then go for it.

You are right I confused it for differential oil but manual transmission fluid is normally thicker than motor oil, maybe not for honda but whatever. I did a little reasearch and you should be able to use motor oil just fine.

...and for everyone else. Forums aren't a place for people to bash on other people when they slip up. So instead of posting stupid **** like "this guy dont know ****."

Why don't you just give some advice. Better yet, get a LIFE!!

It's a common problem with the internet. Most people are very polite to me in person. I'm a nice guy but I'm also big and physically intimidating. People aren't rude to me in my face. On the internet, they can tell me to suck poddle dick with no consequence. We should try to be more polite.

There are far too many people that speak when they shouldn't and dispense advice when they have no knowledge base to make such a statement. General rule on here is if you don't know, don't speak. You might see it as a little mistake, but it could of cost the OP his tranny.

honda designed MANUAL transmission fluid for a reason.....yes older hondas used motor oil but since there is a fluid that is designed for your tranny...why not use it? it will be better in everyway except price.......

i ran the new formulated version of acura mtf in my integra for 20k miles, then switched to Pennzoil synchromesh.....

almost night and day difference...my shifter goes in nicely with hardly any notchiness compared to to acura mtf

Best bet is to use OEM Honda MTF. Can't go wrong..yes you can use a 10w30...but I always recommend OEM fluid to be on the safe side of things. Do not use any type of heavy weight fluids or gear lubes. They will destroy a manual honda transmission in not time!!!

+1

The issues with forums these days, people are more interested in their post count than doling out correct information.

Redline MTF if you do anything hard on it, but I autox my car twice a month, and I run 10w30 napa oil for $3.25 a qt.

One time I put LSD in B16 transmission that was going on a B20v Swap and the guy who owned the car bought cheap 10w-30 for it. I told him to buy transmission fluid as soon as he can. Well days turned into weeks and his transmission ended up being shot.

I recommend to use only transmission fluid for the transmissions.
