h22 auto tensioner unsolved mystery?
i wanted to know how many folks in here are using the automatic tensioner from the oem timing belt kits sold by honda. its been known that they're defective from factory(on the engines) but you would think honda would've fix the problem by now. im curious if anybody has a replacement auto tensioner that is still working or if anyone knows if the ones honda is selling in their timing belt kits are new improved auto tensioners. not sure if i should go the manual route yet but i would hate to let a new part go to waste. i bought my kit through inlinefour, so if anyone has had any luck or problems with the tensioner in the kit they're selling please let me know. it would really help me from making a costly mistake
I am pretty sure that Honda took care of that issue. With that said, I would still only buy the auto-tensioner directly from Honda, that way you get the most current version.
I would strongly suggest you to convert to manual tensioner for the peace of mind. You can always sell the auto-tensioner, there are many owners that still buy them.

Think of it this way, before the Auto tensinors started failing on the H22 they were out of production.
They stopped making the H22 in 2001. The auto tensionors weren't failing right out of the factory, but after 10-15 years of being inside a motor, they start to go, like any other mechanical object.
So no one really would start to complain until about 2002 ten years after the 1992 H22 was introduced.

thanks you guys. and vinuneuro i was thinking of using this with complete after market valvetrain. wasnt sure if it will hold up against skunk2 pro 2's cams
Use the manual tensioner then. If you're buying the parts new, get the 'kit' from importrp.com . Works out a lot cheaper than buying them separately from even Majestic.
