Default A/C questions

Hello all,

I have an 88 crx dx all stock that used to have a/c but the idiot who had it before me took it out. I found a set of all of the hard lines and a few other a/c parts on eBay and I'd really like to put it back in (it's hot as hell outside!!!). What is a good way go about doing this. I know I'll have to get a new compressor and dryer but what compressor should I get because there are 2 brands? Also what are some other parts I should get to assure that it works? The guy selling the lines and parts says that it was in working order when the compressor went out so he just took it out. Thanks for any help.

I am anxious to see replies on this as well. My system is still intact on the 90 CRX Si I just pulled home except the belt is gone. Hopefully our cars have the same components so I can see what I need as well.

Well, you either need the Sanden TR-70 or the Matsushita. From what I understand, the Sanden was more widely used in EF's and is considered "better".

You're going to need whichever compressor was used for the car that you got the lines out of. You should be able to tell by the compressor lines as I believe they're different between the two compressors. So, you'll either have to find pictures of both compressors and visualize which compressor your lines fit, or post pictures of your compressor lines and maybe we could help with that.

You definitely need a new drier. Since you'll have it all apart you should just go ahead and put in a new expansion valve (goes on the evaporator), and put in all new o-rings (lube them first with some dialectic grease).

Then I would put it all together and hook all the lines up except the drier (but put the drier in its place). You'll also need to put some oil in the compressor and a little bit in the lines, about 5 oz total. Keep in mind some compressors come with oil in them so you should drain the compressor and re-fill it yourself so you can know exactly how much is in there. If you're going to go r134a you can use Ester oil (the compressor will probably have this in it), but if youre going to go with the stock r12 (100x better IMO), then you'll run mineral oil.

Then you'll need to take it somewhere and have them vacuum it and charge it for you. Have them hook up the drier right before they vacuum it, and the longer the vacuum the better. Many shops will just vacuum it for 20 minutes or so, but try to find one that'll do it for a full hour. A long, deep vacuum is essential to a/c that blows cold.

^^ what he said.. and if you want to try to vacuum it out and charge it yourself harbor freight sells a cheap vacuum that attaches to your air compressor.

Thanks for all of the helpful comments. I am planning on doing a b16 swap this coming winter and I'm getting everything straigt now so I'll have fewer problems when I do it(hopefully).

if you're doing a b16 swap, save yourself some trouble and get a newer r134a b-series compressor with bracket. then take both sets of hoses to a hydraulic shop that can combine them.
it's easier than finding a hybrid bracket, and an r134a compressor will work better than a converted sanden.
