I'm on my way home from work today in my EG coupe and as I turned a corner and hit the gas there was this belt squeal and then a thunk...then back to normal.
As I get almost home my power steering feels intermitent and the alternator light is coming on...I'm like WTF?
I get home to find that the crank pulley must have digested a rock, sheared off the key, which allowed the pulley to spin, backing out the bolt and allowing the timing belt to come 1/2 off the teeth and cut almost all the way thru the plastic covers!!!
What an F'n day!!
At least the belt didn't give up and toast my Z6...

Word. valves survived, head didn't warp. Lucky bastard. My sister didn't take care of her ls and the t-belt broke. valves bent, head warped. I replaced everything, even found a great price on a Crower valvetrain. Two months later she traded it in for $300 and didn't give me a chance to get it from her. Now that sucked

sounds more like the crank bolt was left loose then a rock damaging anything

 

^^^Thats what I suspected at first too, I tighten them to about 85 ft/lbs though and did this one, just installed the engine about 3 weeks ago. There is a little bit of damage to the pulley where it looks like something went thru it...also the road where I was turning had a bunch of loose rocks and gravel on it....and the key was sheared in 1/2 lengthwise, didn't appear that it walked out and broke the end of it off.

 

85? Isn't the spec somewhere in the low 100's?
Edit: somewhere like 130 ft/lb torque yeah?

Not to thread jack, but the recommend torque setting on the pulley bolt is 14ftlbs +90degree turn. So there is no real number, but over 100ftlbs would be way to tight.

 

You got really lucky. I wouldn't be complaining at all if I were you.

 

My EK manual suggests ~130 ft.lbs, I don't think the EG would be too different, so 100ft.lbs isn't unreasonable. I could be wrong, I'll have to look it up

 

134 ft.lbs on the crank pulley, not 14ftlbs +90degree

 

The car had 210k miles on it. the water pump went before the belt broke
