is it necessary to put 5th gear from a ls into a b16? just a thought..i don't know how but i am curious why you would want to do this?

You're going to need the LS 5th gear, as well as syncros and sleeves and it would be in your best interested to have all the syncros done. A qualified transmission mechanic will get this done faster than any other DIY'er and it would probably be easier to just pay him rather than pulling your hair out wondering how everything goes.

Because the short gearing in the EM1 (B16) transmission, at 70mph in 5th you'd be revving around 4500rpm. With an LS tranny, it would be around 34-3500rpm.

yeah with the LS 5th, you'll be at 3200-ish @ 70MPH.

better gas mileage and doesnt work the motor too hard(if you do alot of highway driving).

You wont get better better mileage, it's all about throttle position.

Not entirely.

While throttle position has a lot to do with it, RPM's does too.

You're going to have more throttle into it to keep the motor at 4500rpm than at 3500rpm with the LS 5th gear.

Any competent tuner will agree that TPS has more of an affect on gas mileage than RPM.

wouldnt it be better to put a gsr 5th in the b16 so you dont run into the so called brick wall with the LS 5th

dont mean to thread revive here but what do you mean when you say brick wall? are you talking about how the acceleration with the ls 5th in the tranny would take a crap compared to having the original b16 5th or even gsr?

im just trying to clarify so i dont feel like such a retard, i haven't been keeping up with the honda game/terminology lately. chasing your kid around the house all the time can really keep you from doing what you want lol

ill just chime in here a gsr 5th gear isnt much longer than a b16 if any.... my gsr trans puts me at abour 4,000 rpms in 5th gear at 75 mph. ( about... my cluster only reads kph so not exact on that 75 mph number)

I have a 00' LS tranny which is stock and it doesn't pull at all when you go into 5th.. the sounds is there but the speed never comes
great for cruising tho not gonna lie

Exactly mpg is more based on throttle positioning compared to rpm's. I'm not saying cruising around in 3rd gear at 7K is an acception either. I have a B16 tranny and at 80 mph I'm flush on 4400 rpm's. A GSR at 80 mph is at 4k rpm's. You believe just cuz the LS tranny is at 32-35K will be getting better gas mileage because of the lower rpm's? When in actuality you'll be giving the LS 5th even MORE throttle just to maintain or pick up speed at 80 mph compared to the B16 5th.

I remember what its like owning a LS tranny. As someone posted above the LS 5th does not go at all. To get it moving you have to give it a good amount of throttle (thats what I had to do). Whereas you're barely giving the B16 5th any throttle at all at 80 mph (5 % at the most, its like its not even pressed). Fyi, I haven't noticed any drastic mpg decreases after switching over to a B16 tranny either.

If the gearing made so much of a big difference in mpg. Why is it that LS/GSR/Type R models all have nearly identical mpg ratings? If you really want to swap in a different 5th I would suggest a GSR 5th atleast. The LS 5th is going to just fall on its face.

I understand we all have our preferences so thats just my 02.

PEACE YA'LL

I have an GSR with an gsr tranny with an 5th ls gear. I HATE IT. Takes alot of trothle to speed up to 80 then when i had my original gsr 5th gear. For long highway drives i like the ls 5th. Going 80 85 and not being in vtec all the time is great. Its all on the driverse taste.

A GSR won't go into vtec until 5,000 RPM under a light load. Full throttle, 4,400, but light load stays out of it until 5k.

ok folks, i have a b16 transmission with lsd and integra LS 5th gear, and i know what he means about the "brick wall" and the reason it is not on the car right now is because i was racing it and when i went from 4th to 5th, it went "bang" i don't know if it was a loss of momentum plus a synchro not matching, but the transmission has to be fixed now and it is drivable but will not go into 5th at all, i have also a gsr and ls transmission sitting around, the gsr does 4k rpms at 80 mph, the ls does 4k rpms at 88 mph, the b16 factory 5th is shorter than the gsr, the ls is a great gear to have if you like running a little in shorter gears but it will hinder you if you fully race your car alot. oh and don't forget the ls 5th gear counter shaft gear, you will need it as well.

ok well another differance in the speed and rmp in a ls from a gsr/b16 would be the final drive. Ls being a 4.26 and gsr and b16 having a 4.4
b16 with ls 5th should be aroubd 85 mph at 4 k and 75 around 3500
i would change final drives before changing to a ls 5th gear

Cool
I guess i learned something new today.
So youre saying that when you punch it hard on the gas then the VTEC kiks in at 4.5 k but if you drive it like a gramma its gonna kik in at 5k.
Thanks

Went out today and actually had to test it lol
Yeah if you dont punch it. Vtec kiks in at around 5.
COOL
