1998 Honda Accord Ex 4cyl VTEC transmission problem
Now, I also have a question maybe you could help with. Our 98 Honda Accord EX 4cyl vtec transmission all of a sudden started slipping yesterday. It only did it from park to first/reverse and when you stop and go again. Engine speed had to hit about 1000rpm then it yanked on you. Fluid level was fine. I have to be honest that I have neglected the transmission services and wasn't aware until then that there is no filter to service which would be more the reason to change fluid every 30,000. More interesting is that today there is once again no problem at all. Pulled codes and get TPS voltage or current issues which has been on and off for about a year now. Any help?
I realize the search function can be a pain sometimes, but this subject has been covered MANY times (I saw at least 2 other posts on the first page like this one). Please use the search next time. Alright, with that said...
This is a very common problem with most automatic Accords. You could have treated your trans perfectly and this still may have happened anyway. Regular maintenance can help, but unfortunately its usually a losing battle. Maybe you will be lucky and its something repairable, but this is often not the case.
As YeuEmMaiMai said, replacing the trans will be the most likely solution. If you haven't at least let a mechanic look at it, do so (or get their opinion at least, don't just take our word for it). Most likely you need to start getting quotes for replacing it. Fortunately the job is becoming cheaper because more and more people are having to have it done.
Good luck!

My wife took it by the shop today and it wouldn't do anything wrong of course. He said however the same about the trannies needing work all the time. Quoted about 1500 to rebuild it. It has 135000 on it and everything else besides the tranny I have always done regular maintenance on. Runs Mobil full synthetic and always Wix filter. Engine should probably outlast the tranny rebuild for sure. It is paid for so if I have to rebuild then so be it.
^ yikes......Maybe its better to buy a JDM low K tranny instead. I was faced with this probel abotu 8000KM ago.
I'm sure you will get the JDM tranny to last as long as the engine. IF you can DIY then for sure put the JDM tranny it its half the price.

it doesn't need to be JDM, but a good low mileage or H&A rebuilt would be best. unless your local mechanic is a honda specialist i would steer clear of having your transmission rebuilt.
the shop i used to work at would do this job with a fresh reman-ed H&A transmission including labor and other parts for about $2200. that's only an extra $700 over you're quote and you know it will be right because that's all H&A does. it also comes with a 3-year warranty.
$1500 is a pretty good price (some may say its high, but usually they know the mechanic, work with them, etc. so its cheaper for them) but like hondamark35, I would question whether these guys do much of this work. However, if you know them to be trustworthy then go ahead.
I also second hondamark35's suggestion of looking into H&A.

Appreciate all the info.
After the first time of acting up and still doing it on the way to the tranny shop, it hasn't done anything wrong since the tech got in and went for a drive. That same day I drained the fluid and replaced with the Honda fluid. The drain plug looked about like a chia pet but probably to be expected after over 100,000 w/ no maintenance. I have heard that this problem could have just been because the inside is so dirty that a screen got temporarily plugged not letting enough pressure through until off idle speed or valve sticking in the valve body. Either way I'm probably going to wind up at the shop sometime. The guys are not import specialists but the do rebuild the Hondas quite often according to the tech.
