1999 Honda Accord- 4 cylinder- automatic
180,000 miles

Over the past year, the car has at random times done the following:
while driving, the tachometer and speedometer both move with the maintenance required light coming on and the transmission not engaging. This lasts about 2 seconds, then everything is back to normal (including the maintenance required light going off and transmission working fine). I have not been able to pinpoint its occurance to a particular gear shift, although it usually happens when I am in a lower gear. It does not occur every day, sometimes it does not do this for a week or 2 and sometimes 2 times in one trip.
On Saturday, this occured again as I was slowing down to turn, but the transmission never re-engaged and the car shut down. It would not crank for the next couple of minutes, then it cranked and I was able to drive with no problems (this is the only time this has happened).
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong? Is this a transmission issue, a computer issue, both, something else?

 

sounds like an electrical problem, not a mechanical one

 

FYI: the car has 180,000 miles and the transmission fluid has not been drained regularly, however, it was drained and replaced (3 quarts) about 2,000 miles ago. The actual car shutting down (turning off) has only happened once.

 

any idea where to start looking if it is an electronic problem?

 

I have a 2001 accord v6. I have never had any transmission problems, until one day it just starts slipping. I can shut the car off for less than a min, start it back up and it would act fine. Now it barely shifts and the d4 light will start blinking. How do i check the shift solenoinds or even know if they are bad?
