Default SOHC, the other white meat??

Wondering why the growing popularity of the sohc turbo setup again? Seems quite a few shops on here are gathering some spare parts and going racing and seem to be having a blast.

Its great to them back out on the track and going much faster than ever before.

Just wondering where it came from, its actually very inspiring

Some do it for the challenge.
Some do it because you can do it cheap.

We are doing it for these two reasons plus we are having a blast at the same time ! My first goal was to hit 140mph w/o nitrous and w/o wheelie bars and we have accomplished that on our 1st weekend at the track. Now our next goal is to run 9.99 or faster still with out nitrous/wheelie bars !

I did it because I had it. I've been enjoying the D for 5 years boosted. They are just a blast to make into quick cars.

I have always liked the sohc, simple, fun and awesome fuel economy. Nothing like beating some guy in a Camaro, popping the hood and he says "that is the same engine that is in my son's/daughter's car!!!" then he just walks away shaking his head.

Ryan has agreat story like that from LVD years back. He was 16y/o and asked the guy next to him in the staging lanes what the 429 on his hood meant. The guy boasted that was for the cubic inches in the motor.

After Ryan beat him, Ryan walks over to the guy and say's, so may be I should put 99 on my hood. The guy ask why, Ryan say's, because it's 99 cubic inches in the motor.

It cost nearly 1/2 the price to build a D-series then a B.

Even tho the trannys/gear ratios suck.

Thats no lie!

We have had more fun with this Project then a lot of the others we have done in the past.

Seems like the SOHC All Motor Car an the SOHC Turbo Car have been the most fun lately !

Like I said its very inspiring with all the new products and and motor development there is out there, we break out what we all started on and run 9s, and trap the amazing MPHs.

great effort honda-tech

Although I am an outcast sohc by comparison to how many D series cars are around, I did my F series sohc just to be different and prove they can make some decent power.

Unfortunately cheap was not something that really went hand in hand with this sohc, as F series dont have the support and options the D series does. Plus my goal dictated some things that are just going to be more money regardless.

CHEAP is the main factor. You an have a bottom end good for 500whp and a head good to 9k for double that.

i love them cause they are cheap...and if you break something, oh well. i had an absolute blast racing my D 3 years ago.....since then i built a b-series that pretty much mimicked everything i did on the D, and i probably spent triple in the process. parts (even stock ones) are waaaaaay more expensive. i found myself babying that car and not wanting to push it as hard as i could, i really didnt want to blow it up lol (even though on the 2nd full pass ever it ingested a valve and destroyed itself lol) if that had happened on a Vitara D, would have cost me what, $500 to fix....where on the B i would have been 3k+ to rebuild. after the GSR motor i built an H2B...still more of the same, expensive parts, scared to break ****....

i am back to my claim to fame, and am currently picking up parts to build another D series for next year....cheap, take a beating, and go fast...sure as hell cant beat that

They are also easier to change the HG on and other head maintenance.

Economy=d-series

I am building a d right now because of a dropped valve in a b series that I couldn't bounce back from.

Although I do not currently have a D series I can remember having more fun at the track years ago with my D series.

Just like others, I am always scared Im going to grenade my stupid B engines. With my D series back in the day I would spray the life out of it and just run it to death and it would take it. I have had thoughts to build up a D and through my turbo stuff on it...

A little off topic, but for fun about 9 years ago my best friend let me borrow his bone stock EF hatch with a 4 speed and the almighty D series that came in it. I took it to the track, bolted my slicks on it, cleared the rats nest out from around the intake, and unbolted the exhaust. Ohhh, we removed all the seats other than drivers seat also, anyways, I ran that car all day at this show/event held at this 1/8th mile track over here. I could pass through the traps in 2nd gear and I outran all kinds of Toyota Tercels, Hyundai Tiburons, and my closest competition was a ZC swapped EF. As far as racing it was some of the best fun I have ever had at the track in a car. All these kids would come over and ask about that piece and ask what I had done to it. I have some of it on video somewhere............
