Need help diagnosing my 92 Accord
Thank you for reading. I have a 92 Accord 2.2L automatic with 104K miles. It has been running fine until yesterday when I was driving on the thruway. I had just gotten up to about 70mph and turned my cruise on and was driving fine. Then all of a sudden the car just turns off. It didn't putter out or shake or try to stay on at all it just shut right off. When I tried to start it again it turns over but won't start. It seemed to be turning over a little faster than normal but I'm not sure. The engine is getting gas but no spark. I put a new distributor cap and rotor in. No dice. The rotor spins but still no spark. So I put in a new coil. Still won't start. Still no spark but now it seems to be turning over a little slower. Probably because the battery is starting to drain. One guy thinks it is the timing belt but I don't think it is because the rotor spins, there's no spark, and it just cut out cleanly but I really don't know anything about cars. I think it is something electrical but I have no idea what it could be. Any thoughts on what the problem could be, or how to go about finding what the problem is will be appreciated. thank you.
Mine did something similar. The above are great tips - I would add: Check your main relay. (Fuel is controlled by this and it might not be getting gas 'every' time.)
The contacts inside the relay might need to be re-soldered. I did that, as opposed to purchasing a new main relay, and now mine starts fine. (Yet I have a mysterious battery drain that I am currently tracking down.) Suffice it to say that it starts every time it has juice or a jump.
