Painted Interior pieces - Longevity?
Im wondering if I can get some firsthand experience regarding painted interior pieces like dashboards and door panels. There are a few products out there that are specifically made for this purpose. Whats the longest everyone has had them in there car? Does it scratch? Is it durable? Can you armor-all it and not have it strip off? Does it fade in the sun? Whats the best brands to use? Give me some feedback!
I haven't used it personally yet, but SEM brand dye seems to be the popular choice if you want to do it right. The way NOT to do it is to paint it...it will crack and peel off. Dye is thin enough to preserve the texture, and since it's not paint it won't peel.
Yes ive seen the SEM brand.... def seems to be the most popular. Im just wondering how long it will hold up. I agree that if its a dye it should be for the life of the parts and hold up as good as a stock dashboard. Just wondering if some people can give me some feedback after its been in there car for a couple years.
I painted my DA Integra interior 5 years ago. I used Krylon vinyl die spray paint on all the vinyl parts. It still looks just like it did when I first painted it. I used the same stuff on the plastic parts and it started to flake off after a few years. I have since been re-painting the plastic stuff with satin black Krylon Fusion. It holds up fine and is just as durable as the vinyl paint. I have had a few panels painted with the Fusion for about 3 years and no fading or flaking. I would have used the Fusion originally but at the time they didn't make a flat or satin black, only gloss.
Does anyone know of a product to dye the plastic pieces similar to the vinyl dye? I dont actually want to paint anything, just dye them. Wish i could change my thread title
I did my whole interior in my EG hatch with Rust-Oleum satin black that I got from The Home Depot http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...4X-_-202016508. I pulled all panels out and painted them with 5+ very light coats until it was even and one uniform color. For the dash and steering wheel, because I was being lazy, I painted them in the car. First I pulled the gauge cluster and radio then taped up the climate control. Then just took out the bolts form the sides (behind the door panels) and the one under the vent on top and pulled it away form the window. taped up the window and pushed it back in and sprayed it. It came out great and didn't chip or scratch even when I tried too make it. Also I live in the desert and it gets dumb hot out here and it didn't fade.
I think you should just paint it if it's plastic. If it's a vinyl, soft stuff, then just the dye. Making a paint job last, ANY paint job weather it's interior or exterior. It all has to do with how well you prep the surface. it needs to be clean, free of debris, and rough enough for the paint to adhere well to. I painted my interior pieces, with krylon I think it was, it's a paint that's specific for plastic. Fusion, or something like that. I cleaned all the pieces, brushed it down with a scotch pad, and cleaned it with wax and grease remover. Used latex gloves. applied 2-3 coats. Been perfect ever since.
