stock tach reading 2000 rpm too high?
my tach is not reading right. it doesn not bounce at all but at 70 mph in 5th gear it reads 5500 rpm. When i start the engine up and its cold, it will go up to 3000 rpm before easing down to 1500. it acted weird like this for two days, then it was fine for one, and now it has been messed up for the past 3 days. I did a search put most people problems involved a bouncy tach mine is not bouncing at all.
Anyone?
Is it most likely the tach itself or something in the distributor? the only thing is, from doing a search, it sounds like when the ignitor is going out it is more of a bouncing tach

when its revving to 3k when its cold does it sound like 3krpm?
when its warm what does the tach show?
easy way to find out if the tach is reading too high....in first gear go very very slow, in gear on the brakes if you have to just to go slow like to a crawl.
if you are reading 1k rpm or whatever the car feels like it should be, then its correct.
if the car is going slow and almost shuttering and still reading 2k rpm something is wrong.

when it warms up it idles at 2000
going down the road at 70 mph the tach reades 5500 but sounds normal (~3250?)

has your tach always done this? If it has and its consistently off by 2000 rpm then you can adjust the needle on the tach, i've done it using hondata to reference the correct rpm. let me know if you want more info on this.
You didn't give a very clear answer to Turbo Dan's question. Yes or no....... Does it sound like 3000 RPM when the tach reads 3000 RPM. Please dont say normal.
after re-reading your post i would guess that your tach is on the fritz (going bad)
You can get another cluster from a junkyard and just swap the tach over to your original cluster.

I'm having the identical problem. Noticed that when I turned on the ignition switch without starting the car the tach would jump up to 1500 to 2000 rpm's.
I'm still investigating as you are, the engine itself sounds normal while driving though the tach is pretty scary - never thought my engine would rev past 6,500 not it's impressive at 8,500 well into the red before shifting (auto trans).
If I discover anything I'll repost but logically I'm thinking it's a tach/electrical issue and not the engine performance itself.

I have been having the bouncing tach issue which I just resolved by installing a new ignition coil. It runs smoothly and the tach doesn't bounce at all. However, now my rpms are too high, exactly as you describe. I'm not sure what to blame. Maybe the ignition module itself?
