Default Rack & Pinion Identification...!!!

I already searched the faq and cannot find anything about the rack and pinion for a ef...Anyways I traded some guy off of craigslist a rice cannon muffler for a manual ef rack and pinion that needs to be rebuilt...I was wondering if you can tell in the pics provided if it really is indeed for a ef and if i can use it on my ef2 with power steering...My suspension is all shot up and I figured it would be better to rebuilt this rack and pinion since it only costs $55 to rebuild out in Los Angeles at a shop...Any info would be appreciated

the pictures kinda suck but it looks like an ef rack. and no you cant run power steering on it. theres really nothing to rebuild a non power rack is super simple and you could do it yourself and save some money. mostly the plastc bushing inside them wear out and you can feel the slop in it. and then replace the inner and outer tie rods.

You should replace the #10 rack bushing. Check Tyson's FAQ thread for more info.....

Thanks H-T for more info.....Good Luck

they are not the same. the si has longer teeth on the pinion, not sure about the rack, but the internal housing might be a little different as well.

it will still bolt up fine.

if your inner tie rods are ok, then all you need is #10 rack end bushing and #7 pinion seal. and of course, boot covers.

Thats funny how the non SI are shorter... on the 3rd Gen Civics/1st Gen CRX the HF racks are shorter lock to lock than the SI...

38 is the bearing that needs to be repressed onto the pinion gear.

They aren't the same, but I have an STD gear box here which is the same as the DX. Dunno what my OTHER steering rack is, but I will compare the two to see if there are any differences in them.

DX, STD, HF are all the same.

Si (civic and CRX) will have VWR stamped on it. meaning variable.

the housings and pinions are different between the two, not interchangeable internally, meaning you cannot put a quaife rack in a Si steering rack since it was made to fit a DX (et al.) rack. but it will swap into the same crossmember just fine.

as for a power steering rack, it is "quicker" but i dunno if its worth any effort to put in, swap crossmembers or kludge it with any rubber spacers.

Yes your NON-PS rack will fit right on it. That stamp means variable which I believe it means it's the PS rack instead of the NON-PS rack. Correct me if I'm wrong.
