SVT 4door?!
I have never seen such a car by ford...it had a body kit and dual exhaust on the back. I live in the garland/richardson area of Tx so i am thinking ricer. So i pull up behind this to see what it has and all i hear is this loud exhaust that sounds like a V8 and a Ninja turtle sticker on its rear window( which is awesome by the way). Anyways, I raced this 4-door down the street where we both turned, and through 1st and second i was his but then i hit 3rd and this thing just PULLS hard i mean he left me by 2 lengths. So can anyone tell me what this thing is, if he shot nos or not or is it just that quick?
i dunno i've never seen one before....i mean ford put something like that out?! what kind of numbers does it have compared to SH ludes? I mean he left me like i was nothing.
yes, a friend up here at a local spot has one. they are deceptively quick.
in my h22a accord, he walked me upto 140mph. i was bouncing off the revlimiter at 8000rpm on the stock tach and he kept going.
very quick cars especially on the highway.
he was relatively stock. k&n, high flow cat,

Ok so i'm driving back from the weekend in Boston. And after my reststop halfway home i got the hiccups.
How annoying!!! I tried everything to get rid of them, but nothing worked (figured).
So about 1.5 hrs from home i pass a Contour SVT and i think "sweet playtime" but it is 9:00 and it is pretty dark. But i pass with the cruise on and i look over and he does nothing... Oh well i think and i continue on my way. About 15 minutes later i think that i see his head lights comming up on me!! Mmmmm snack time.
Well he passes about (90 mph) cool i get behind him and turn off Cruise and follow he opens it up (puts a quick car on me) and i shift down into 4th and gain that back and gain QUICK! I short shift into 5th and have to keep letting off and getting back on it so I don't rear end him! I thought that they had more gut than that!!?? I take it to arround 120~ and flash my headlights (traffic is why i was behind i know i know should not race in traffic, but i was bored) But he keeps going and gets way ahead. I speed to catch up and i want to go again from a slower speed (45mph ) but he will not slow down!! so the highway is open now!! I down shift to 4th (about 85mph) and blip the throttle real quick to make the front end jump. He bites real hard!! I hammer 4th and open a quick 2 cars and shift into 5th stay there for a few seconds, and let off. What does he do?? YUP the ricer fly by after he sees the brake lights!! Moron!
Moral of the story :
So after the rush subsides i think Hummm no more hiccups!! Sweet!! So if you ever have a stuborn case of Hiccups go out and find a SVT and make him your B!TCH

Bwhahahahaha! That's my friend
It has an exhaust and a K&N drop-in filter...that's it. Were you the red Prelude SH?
I woulda raced ya, but I don't street race
Performance wise, they are equal to the 5g Prelude (acceleration wise). The SVT & Co. at Ford *really* hacked 3rd gear, so it is a really short gear. That gear pulls really hard, but going into 4th, it will lose some of that pull. The only way to beat them, is to get a hellacious launch, and getting enough of a start to keep him from pulling that launch back by 3rd gear.
David
PS: I had the older white Prelude...

yeah i am the red sh...i remember you, you had that white older gen lude...nice car man. But i seem to see your friend around all the time, i try to race him to see what i can do, but he never budges anymore, i think he's scared. I've raced contours and have beaten them bad, but i seriously think that K&N with exhaust wouldn't pull on a prelude that hard. Its not like it has Vtech or anything, what kind of motor does it have, anyting that switches cams, i think not. Especially from ford.

Why would you even blip the throttle to make the front end jump? That defeats the purpose of rev matching. Bliping it keeps the revs in the powerband of the lower gear you wish to put it in from a higher gear. And it won't get the front end to jump. The only way is when you just put it into a lower gear from a higher gear , that's when it jumps. But by doing that you'll end up screwing up your clutch and you've gotten out of your car's powerband.

Wait a second... you mean they don't have Vtech phones in the SVT Contours?! Crap and I was actually admitting they were nice cars until I found this out. Ford's probably being cheap and used some off brand phone. Typical!

yeah they don't have vtech phones, but hondas use Sony phones. Wait isn't sony going to crap too?! I guess honda isn't getting much better either compared to Ford with sorry phones.
Thanks for the compliments. Your car is pretty slick itself. I love that red Milano of yours. My friend loved the way your car sounded behind his w/ the VTEC screaming in his ears. But, yeah, it's a 2.5L V6. It is armed with 'Duratec,' a version of VTEC by Ford. It puts out 200hp...so it is very equal to the 5g Prelude.
However, I think a 4g VTEC will beat it. 4g VTECs are lighter, have a better gear ratio, and seem to put out more on the dynos then 5g Preludes do.

Duratec is not ford's version of VTEC by far. That 2.5l puts out 195hp with non-variable cam geometry. It has an upgraded cams, valvetrain, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, freeflow exhaust, versus the normal 2.5 v6 in the Contour sport, probe GT, and Mercurey cougar, it is altogether a very nicely put together performance sedan. My friend has one, its a very torquey (spelling) car; as fast as a 5th gen lude thats for sure. As for the Duratec, I think it has something to do with it not needing a tune up for 100,000 mi., but I'm not quite sure
It is a form of VTEC, and it is too variable. 1st gear doesn't switch over to higher lift cams until a certain rpm. As for second gear, its a 4k before it switches cams like the 5glude at 5500. As for as the difference between the regular contours the svt's have a 5lb lighter flywheel, Extrude honed intake manifold, port and polished heads, freer flowing exhaust, and a revised cpu. As for torquey, this engine is not, only 169lb at 5500 rpm and a hp of 200 at 6600. This car has nothing but high-end power and barely anything under 4k. I know this because...I am the guy with the NINJA TURTLE sticker on the windshield. Don't get me wrong Piotrush i am not trying to offen you in anyway. Just lending in my .02

No offence taken, but when I drove my friend's it felt like it had alot more fun below the 2000 rpm range. His is a 1998.5 model year which had 195hp as opposed to the 99 with 200hp. As for the higher lift cams, I am almost positive that Ford has only one set of camlobes in its engine, The have the technology of variable valve timing, but not lift. Kind of like nissan, and toyota ( celica GT has VVTI and the GTS VVTLI where the L is for higher lift). Sorry for being so persistent, but its a Honda thing.
one of my friends has a 98.5 Contour SVT. they're pretty fast. 2.5 liter, 195 hp.
one of the few 4 doors i'd ever buy. go to contours.org for more info on them.
i have his quarter mile times here somewhere. i was supposed to scan them for him.
he has an intake, removed resonator, lowered .75", high flow Y pipe, BAER brakes.
there really isn't much aftermarket support for them... but their nice in stock form.

Image of the SVT camshafts
The SVT Contour does not have valve-variable technology. The head was designed to incorporate a variable valve technology, but it was never implemented by ford in the SVT contour product life. The sound or "switching you may hear at or above 4000 rpms is the dual-runner intake manifolds, much like the GSR intake manifold. At higher RPM's, the butterflys open up allowing more air into the engine.
[Modified by mackymcg, 3:56 AM 8/24/2002]
The sound is just not that of the intake manifold it does switch to hotter cams after 4k. The sound of the intake is like a small turbo building pressure with a whine. It isn't excatly vtec but like i said it is a *form* of it. As for cams the contour is a DOHC. No doubt the svt is a cool car, but it does lag behind preludes a bit in the handling catagory due to its minor heavier weight. It can be made into a great road race/autocross car but then again lack of aftermarket support is killing the car.

What hotter cams? I see one lobe per valve, what does it switch too? Does it physically move the camshaft or put spacers inbetween the camshaft and valves? I'm just trying to figure out what variable valve lift it has, I can't see any mechanisms in the head for it to be possible.
svtguy601 - Ford didn't put variable valve technology on the contour because it didn't have that technology at the time. Now, the SVT Focus has variable valve timing, bun not variable valve lift. These are two very diffent things. So, even now the Focus still doesn't have a cam switchover point like a vtec honda or vvtl-i toyota. I don't even know why we are comparing Ford's engine technology to that of Honda.
So i was wrong......i'll admit that, everyone needs a good put down here and there to learn something new. Good source at that. At least i thought it was a form of vtec now i know better.......secondary runners.....
I've been hearing rumors that ford might bring back the SVT contour. In Europe it sells as the Mondeo ST220. Wouldn't that be nice? 220hp, 3.0l dohc v6, 0-60 in 6.5 sec.
are the auto svt contours a lot slower? my friend has one and i need to race him befor e he puts his blower on
how bout the taurus s-h-o s, this one is auto also, but the engine has .2 more liters than the stick to make up for some lost power.

I really don't think the SVT ever came in auto. My guess is he rebadged it. If its a contour sport with 170hp and SVT cladding you should take him. Check under the hood, if the valve cover says " Duratec: High output" then you might have problems; unless he rebadged the engine too.
