TSB: Engine - Flapping Noise Between 1,800 & 2,600 RPM
From http://www.alldata.com/TSB/24/982404AC.html
01-010 JAN 01 Engine - Flapping Noise Between 1,800 & 2,600 RPM (1998 H22A4l)
Anyone come across this problem, or have Honda do any work related to this? I recently started having some engine knock/rattles, usually more around 2500 - 3500, and at startup...and probably due to some stress from autoX...but perhaps not.
Just wanted to see if anyone else had any luck with this....

well, My car when its warmed up, sputters from like 1800-3500 rpm, as does a fellow board member, if thats the case, then check your ignition coil, the other board member(overdose) determined that that was the problem..
i have a hesitation problem from about those same rpms and i have an internal coil...how would you explain that?
im going to try my tps

No, this is with a totally stock 1998 base.
Mine was also recalled for the ignition problem. They fixed that, and then regarding the engine noise, said they'd have to rebuild the engine! They didn't even hesitate; said it would be fully covered under my basic warranty. I wonder if that is a "silent warranty" kind of thing...that the original ignition problems, and this problem, might be related, and might cause unusual wear on the motor, requiring the rebuild?
