Default Transmission noise from GSR, need advice.

I have a 98 DC2 w/ 208K on the odometer. I purchased the car from a local RV dealer who used the car to flat tow behind RV's, which explains the high miles. The car makes a slight grunt when steping on the clutch down to the floor, but only when shifting. It also makes whinding noises while I drive speeds up to 70-80mph as well. It sounds very similar to the sound of mismatched tires but the second I drop it into neutral, the whind goes away. I have not changed the MTF yet and the gears all shift very smooth with no problems. What could be doing this to the car? Any help and suggestions would be appreciated. Thx!

If he towed it wit the front tiers on the ground it can put wear on the gears. Change the fluid and see how it is.

My bet is the Input Shaft Bearing.

Really? That just sounds very expensive to fix!! I hope changing out the fluids with Honda MTF will do the trick.

It really does seem like Input Shaft Bearing. I have the same issue and that is my problem. It's really not a bad repair, just takes time and reading alot. Just purchase the part from honda for about $40 and replace a few other bearings while your at it and put the trans back in. Good luck with it

Definitely change the trans fluid if it hasn't been changed already. It *should* be changed as frequently as every other oil change, if not every oil change. So do that so you have a solid base to work from.

To me, it sounds like you have a combination of issues, with one most certainly being a bearing on the out. The other may just be a point of friction along the moving path of the clutch system which is causing noise and only noise. Hard to say with that as you only describe it as a 'grunt'.

Also, there is a specific transmission section on the site. Posting the topic there may yield better results, my friend.

Thx for all the replies fellas. I'll do what I can to resolve the problem, starting with the fluids then work my way from there.

Hmmm, if it comes down to it, I'll make sure to replace both throw out and input shaft bearings when the time comes. I'll be replacing the fluids today so I hope it'll reduce if not, elminate the whine. Thx.

Hey guys, I'm in the process of doing my flush and refill. Do I need to replace the washers from the drain and fill plug as well? If so, can I replace it with copper washers? I'm using Pennzoil synchromesh. I thought about using HMTF but, figure since it might be dealing with the bearings and syncros, I'd get this instead.

Ok, so turns out after I changed the fluids, the car still makes the whine noise....but, it isn't coming from the tranny! It's comng from something loose from the engine itself. Could be a loose part or bolt. Sounds like the header or cat might be loose cause it makes a vibrating noise after careful diagnosing. Thx anyways for the help guys!
