hey guys I am buying a car with a b20b long block in it. The owner said that the motor was "fully build" there is no paper work ect.

He said that he pulled the valve cover and the cams are suppose to be bizzi cams and sk2 valve train. There are no holes drilled for oil caps in the cams so I assume they are aftermarket, is there anyway to tell if the valve train is sk2 like any colored markings ect, and also for the cams is there anyway to tell if they are truly bizzi cams.

As far as the block goes he said that it has darton sleeves, and wiseco pistons rod brand was not specified, could they be stock?

My main question is what is a stock b20bs compression suppose to be at (on a tester like psi)
also if it were built for high compression I know that obviously the compression would test out higher than stock, and obviously lower if it was built for low comp.

Is there anything else that could be looked at to see if the motor is actually built.

He has no papers, no nothing, but I am getting a good deal on the car and motor so I would pick it up if it tested good across the board.

I appreciate any help and I just would like to know for things to look for to make sure it is built or in good working condition.

As for the s2 valve-train; the only thing that looks different is the retainers. The valves and springs look pretty close to the stock. I know that they are s2 because I bought them new. As for the sleeves; You may have to pull the head to see them. That will also tell you what the pistons, walls, and rings are up to. It is kind of hard to tell you what your comp should come out to without knowing the full story(head, deck height, gasket thickness, piston comp, ect). Mine read 205 across the board when it was a fresh full build.

 

thanks for the insight I know it will really be hard to tell if the block is actually sleeved or what not but as far as your compression testing at 205 was that with the b20b head, because that was the range I was thinking if it were a high compression build.

the only way to fully 100% is to pull the motor apart and look,
if he has no papers, no recients or anything id be very causious, inless hes willing to prove it,

 

what are going to be some indications that they are in fact aftermarket cams, I am more or less concerned about the block being built.

 

If it was built it should at least have a tune. If he can't prove that, how long was we beating up an untuned engine? On top of that, if it's built and not tuned, now you have to get it tuned. Consider some of that.

 

gibsanez I completely understand what your are saying, I am getting this for a hell of a deal, and from the sounds of it he was running it on a non chipped ecu that had redline set at like 6900. He said the previous owner had a chipped ecu that redlined at 8200, I just wish that he had some papers showing the bottom end was built.

 

lol no sense in beating a dead horse... you already know what we are all thinking... it's your call if you wanna roll the dice as I doubt he would lend you the car so that you could tear down the engine to confirm his allegations.

 

You're getting a good deal. No one gives their car away. I think he's trying to play you for a fool.

 

What are your plans for the car? the stock internals are more than enough for most NA applications. Are you looking to make it a daily driver or a track car? It might not be worth worrying about unless you plan on going turbo or breaking 300 ft/lbs. As far as the tune, if the car ain't broke don't fix it. That is, if it runs fine don't sweat it (also probly indicates that the guy is BSing you)
