Okay, my motor needs to come out in my BB6, obviously an H22A4.
I have been against boosting NA Honda, for the simple fact of sound. I do love the noise from an NA screamer, like a DOHC VTEC Honda or a last gen Celica GT-S.
As you know, turbo usually muffles a cars note, usually giving even a B/H/K/F a flat 4G63/SR20-like tone. I have been against turbo for that single reason.
But I have seen vids with GOOD sounding turbo Hondas. What is the secret to keeping the hight wail of a DOHC VTEC motor with turbo?
typical SR/4G

Honda with flattened exhaust note, sounds like above:

Even this Evo doesnt have the usual Evo blat:

The sound is big thing for me. I have spent much money swapping out/changing cars, and having to change stuff or fix issues with them. Since my Prelude is a fresh car with the motor recently put in (and must be taken out) I'm building this one. Screw prebuilt beat *** ***** like I have had before. Now I have a Prelude, not a Civic ot Teg, and I cant swap swap a Prelude with H22 like a Teg I had, throw nitrous on and be fast. The Prelude, while retaining AC/PS, full interior, and sound system, can ONLY be fast with turbo....so.
But basically, when I piece together a turbo, I need to know which combination of parts gets me an enigine note not muffled by turbo components. If I were building a car that sounds like *** anyway (like a SOHC, SR, 4G, ect) then I wouldnt care.
Thanks for any help.

not muffled??
well, doesn't matter which turbo you pick, a turbo reduces the exhaust note.
I think you'll just have to play with mufflers to get your desired sound.
I had a racing muffler on my civic when it was first turbo'd and it was VERY loud.
After getting hounded too much by cops, I switched to a more quiet muffler and haven't been bothered by the cops since.
The exhaust note will all depend on your final setup. Up to you to play with it.

There is more difference between the way those were recorded than the actual cars.
Any car making big power sounds good so just do that and then play with different mufflers and wastegate routing if you really care about the sound that much.

Well I have a similar question to the OP's. I want my car to sound like it came straight from The Fast and The Furious, Oh Yeah I also want it to pull wheelies. How do I get that "mAd VtAkN" I keep hearing about?
Come on man, be serious you want to build your car around sound? As stated before, any car built well and putting out good numbers will sound good. Don't throw cheap parts at it and spend about 6-10k on your whole tubro setup and you will be golden, hittin' the ISH, and getting the B!tches, y0! (Not.)

Its gpoing to come down to many factors. the size of the turbo, what style manifold your running, the trim on the turbine wheel. the cams your running, the size exhaust and what mufflers your running.
my car sounds pretty damn good but my friends car just screams and we have similar setups. i thin kthe difference is im runnign 89mm stroke with an e cover turbo and he is running 87mm stroke with s cover turbo. the s cover is larger inlet so essentially acts like a larger intake and can allow some of the engine note to come alive.
also the length and placement of the dumptube as well as the size of the dump tube and wastegate will play a factor in this. there alot of variables but essentially a turbo car will be quieter than an NA car but you can make it sound pretty close. that first prelude that sounds burly is more than likely open DP or has an Ecutout
i also run two mufflers to keep things quiet out of the rear end of my car so i can hear my engine more so than the exhaust notes. i to like the sound of the vtec engine screaming along but it always sounds better when complimented by the whoosh sound of a spooled turbo and when the gate opens and you get the loud exhaust note hitting off the pavement

turbo sounds good, engine doesn't.
According to everyone else, there seems to be too many viariables. I dont want to get it together, then sound like ***, and have to sell **** to local cheapskates. FUUUUuuuuu
That CRX you posted sounds awesome. He's running an open DP aka NO exhuast man.
Look into the turbo version of the WS2. 3in inlet and still sounds great. Try running open dump as well. My car used to sound nice and quiet until I hit boost and the wastegate opened.

I know he has no exhaust, I've been under that car. An exhaust tip attached to nothing is glued to the rear bumper, for appearance, because the car USED to be streetable. It still doesn't sound like its on motor. And I know the WS2 is one of those quiet deals. I'm basically trying to sound like I am on motor, just with spooling, if that makes sense.
Look at his Sig it says it all. I think he may be the guy from The First Fast and Furious that is retarded and looses his Dad's VW Jetta to Jonny with the S2000 and now he needs more sound to scare off Jonny's gang members... Oh wait the retard got shot in the end...

....
You're in the wrong place if your main goal is the sound of your exhaust.
