Interseting tire observation
Long story short, my 205/50-15 Bridgestone Potenza S03 Pole Positions were pretty worn out. Both fronts had corded on the inside edge. The rears were just barely legal tread depth. My brother just bought a 1988 Porsche 924 S, and it came with 12 15" rotary dialers all with tires. One set had 225/45 Hoosiers on them. Three were decent, on was toast.
So I loaded the two best Hoosiers in the trunk and headed for the tire store. I ordered another set of S03s, and had them rotate the rears to the front for the next week until the new tires arrive. Then I had them mount the Hoosiers on the rear figuring that the rears take about 1/10th the amount of wear. I figured having tires that were much wider and much stickier on the rear would create under steer during hard cornering. Wrong!
The car is amazing in the corners, not that it wasn't before but DAMN. It turns in immediately, and has very neutral handling even at the limits. I started playing around trying to coax the tail out, or get it to plow through a corner but it wouldn't. Even when braking hard in a corner it just held the rear, and sent the weight up front. There is no lift off over steer anymore.
Any way, I thought you all might find this interesting, especially TUAN if he is still around. I had planned on this being a temporary fix while my tires are shipped, but I think I may play around a bit more. I know TUAN had mentioned putting harder tires on the rear to increase over steer. Anyone else tried different tire combinations with good results?
