Default can u boost a stock type r w/out pinging?

i have a b18c1 with type r pistons so obviously i'm at 11:1 cr at the moment. i thinking of boosting it if it's possible, but i checked it on the compression calculator and with the basic 7lb boost jumps the cr to 16.3:1!! the guy that rebuilt my motor has a real type r supercharged running 9lbs of boost with the oem pistons. or so he says. he said he runs just on 91 supreme no pinging. i just find it hard to believe cause he's a little crazy, but an awesome mechanic. i was just curious if anyone else has had any experience with this or if this guy is full of **** and it's not possible. thanks

You can safely make 300-350whp on the stock block without problems. The pinging problem is purely fuel related. Those compression calculators also give you a bit of misinformation. Boost pressure alone isn't the whole story. Gross airflow and power creation are your limiting factors...not the pressure required to hit your power goal. Read through the FI FAQ at the top of the forum

i understand it's purely fuel related that's why i'm wondering if i could get away with just using cali's shitty 91 octane supreme without pinging

I boosted an 11.5:1 B16 motor with about 7 lbs. with out problems. It is all about the setup and tune. You have to remember though there is a difference in static compression and the dynamic compression created through boosting. Typically with static compression you are greatly limited by the air that you have being pulled into the motor. You can always throw more fuel at it but there is a limit as to how much air can be brought in on a N/A car. With a turbo car you can push more air and throw as much fuel as you can at it so there are less limiting factors. You can only run a car so rich before it stops igniting the air/fuel mixture and only run a car so lean as well before detonation occurs.

Answer: Get a good tune and it will be fine.
