Yeah, 10W30 is what honda originally recommended until they came out with their own manual transmission fluid. They say you can use both but it's all preference.
Here are some others you can look up
GM Syncromesh
GM Syncromesh Friction Modified(What I use)
Redline MTF
Pennzoil Syncromesh(same as the cheaper version of GM Syncromesh)

Don't use the Redline Lightweight Shockproof, it is still too thick. Infact, don't use anything that says Gear Oil and/or has a weight rating.
In order of personal preference:
- Torco RTF (Not required unless you are putting down big power, or constant high-rpm shifting)
- Torco MTF
- GM/Pennzoil Synchromesh
- Honda MTF
A lot of people use the Redline MTL successfully, but some have had bad experiences.

I've rebuilt quite a few trannys that used Redline MTL, so stay away.
10w30 or Pennzoil Synchromesh, good for 300 whp or SCCA ITA racing. Beyond that I wanna try the Torco.
I do have a 425 whp powered Y8 OBX tranny living on Synchromesh......yeah a rarity.

A basic analogy would be: Oil is your transmissions blood supply and needs to flow smoothly. Clog it up with cholesterol (i.e thick gear oil), and it will have a heart attack. Not enough Iron (i.e shock additives), and it will get anaemic/weak.
Can you use the thick gear oil? yes, of course, just like how you can eat McDonalds fries everyday. Doesn't mean it's doing you any good

aha, I knew I missed out someone. We have a few guys over the pond running the Amsoil Synchromesh on their weekend warriors without problem, so there's another one to add to my list
Anyone know the Viscocity Index / Viscocity of the Torco RTF or Torco MTF?

i was reading through and no one said anything about Amsoil, i just filled my jdm gsr with oem lsd up with some Amsoil Synchromesh.. the only thing that had me iffy was the label on the bottle said it's a 5w30, and honda recommends 10w30 oils.. shouldn't be a problem, should it?
Actually, just looking through the Redline website and they actually have a super lightweight shockproof fluid which, looking at their specs on paper, is very low viscosity. This may work good as well, although I don't know anyone who has used it.
Their lightweight shockproof, on paper, is actually similar to the Torco RTF. However, after having tried both fluids in our transmission, what they put on paper is certainly not what we experienced

im going to be getting this stuff instead of honda MTF

anyone running this stuff?
Ok, I guess I will be grabbing 2 quarts of 10W-30 GTX to run in the stock STD trans. Is there any advantage to synthetic oil in the gearbox like a Syntec or would conventional work well.
The plan is to pick up a d16a1 or ZC to swap into my 91 STD as well as an Si or DX transmission, so I don't plan to run anything major until then, but the real question is: Does synthetic matter in the gearbox or would GTX suffice?

Like running crappy brake pads.....which is all a synchro is.
i dont know how much experience you have with the lightweight shockproof ****, but it works absolutely fine.
