Default VSS installation...

I have a B16a3 w/ a Y21 tranny and I am trying to install a VSS from a 99 Integra GSR. I can't seem to get the vss in. Any Do's and Don'ts as far as installing it is concerned? This is the last thing I need to install on my car to make it work. Anyhelp and all help would be MUCH appreciated! Thanks for your time.

It should just drop in with a little push to seat the o-ring.

check to see if there the same vss,

From the research I have done and threads I've read, the 99 gsr unit should work w/ any vtec b-series engine regardless of year or obd interation.

Compare it with the old one. Try turning the gear on the vss and insert again.

I don't have the old one... this new tranny didn't come w/ a vss and I gave my old one to a guy that ripped me off.

bump for an answer please. Is there a vss install thread on here or is just as simple as dropping it in and bolting it down? I have no idea what to do since this thing won't fit. Some please help me.

I also read this thread and it mentions something about jdm and usdm vss having fitment problems. the poster states that usdm vss's will not fit in some y21 trannys.... maybe that's why I am having this problem?

how about doing research instead of posting like that? people wont help you with that additude.

with that being said, are you swapping the while VSS assembly, or just the sensor? there is two parts to teh VSS. a metal "base" bolts to the tranny, with one or two bolts, then the sensor bolts to that. one part has the gear and shaft that goes into the tranny, the sensor simply has a shaped hole for the top of the shaft. like others have said, try rotating both the shaft and the sensor part.

it should work. it has to be a tight fit, otherwise tranny fluid will come out that hole.

just be careful and dotn force it.

post back results.

People dont mind helping you, but its no excuse to get angry becasue no one else posting in TWO FREAKING HOURS

have a bit of patience

I can understand the frustration, no hard feelings.

And like what was said, it should fit fine. take a few pictures. if you think it fits, but is too damn tight, try wiping some ttranny fluid on it to let it slip into place. Ive had to replace quite a few transmissions in my cars, and sometimes Ive had to take an air tool to teh tranny case to get the VSS out. I can imagine its a pain in the friggin *** to put it in.

okay, here is what I would do. remove the VSS sensor from its bracket thing. you will be left with teh bracket thing and the shaft seperate from the VSS now.

take your finger, and rub the inside of the VSS hole. do you feel any rough edges? scratches? any ridges from maybe a hasty VSS removal form teh previous tranny owner? these can cause it to be very hard to put a VSS back in.

once you have determined its fairly smooth, take some fresh tranny fluid or motor oil, and spread it inside the hole. now cover the VSS bracket portion that goes in. when you have done that, attempt to install it. while pushing down, turn the shaft by the top piece. its kinda square or D shapde end of the shaft. wiggle the whole assembly slightly.

if that doesnt work, you can get a rubber mallet and LIGHTLY tap it into place. If you dont have a rubber mallet, get a piece of wood, and lightly tap it with a normal hammer. dont go crazy here, very light taps are all thats necessary.

stop every few seconds to turn the shaft.

this might take a few seconds or a few minutes. jsut go slow. It took me about an hour to do one at one time. all the others Ive ever had to do popped right in with only a small amount of difficulty.

hope this helps

ok... so here's the deal... I think I might have a lesson for all of us to learn... I just got off the phone w/ steve at hmotorsonline and he told me that a b16a3 vss from a 94-95 del sol will mate w/ this transmission perfectly. When I told him that I had a 99 gsr vss he told me the shaft was too long and wide for the y21 transmission. So, I will get a b16a3 vss and keep everyone posted on if this works or not.

ok... so I got the del sol vss in today and it is EXACTLY the same as 99 GSR. I was afraid this would happen. The new one is too big to fit in the hole too. I am just a little upset and totally stumped now. Isn't their anyone that can enlighten me on this? I have heard some jdm y21 trannies will not accept usdm vss sometimes. Any insight on this would be great.

Yeah, I called steve back and he wanted me to send him pictures of the transmission. I did and just waiting to hear back from him tmrw. This is the part that is giving me the headaches... 23811-P36-000. I checked online to see if it was the right part and I think it is. Said it was compatible w/ a Del Sol... I'm at my wits end w/ this. Steve said that if it was an aftermarket lsd that the vss might need to be a custom made one. I have no idea what brand it is although I was told it was a factory lsd.

I did a bit of research and was thinking maybe the ring gear is too big on the lsd and maybe that is what is causing my problem. Maybe it's going in at a slight angle? Could that be a possibility?

This is an idea, but don't try it until we get some more input on this idea because its Ghetto last resort. Would grinding that nipple at the end of the gear make it fit?

Here are 2 pix of inside the lsd from the passenger side w/ the axle pulled... Can anyone identify this lsd? I think it might be aftermarket since the ring gear doesn't fit. Do I need a custom gear pinion 2 mate to this ring gear or put a different ring gear to fit the original gear pinion? How hard would it be to replace the ring gear?
