yes you can just get a new one at the junk yard. Has your car always been doing this or did it just start? If it always has maybe your striker and latch are not aligned. Try putting some lubericant in there too and see if that helps before you go spend some money on something you don't need. And when you replace it make sure you line everything up right or it will have the same problems.

Same thing was happening on my old '91 Civic. I realized the release lever was not coming all the way back down into its resting place. At least, it was coming back down on its own. Something to try watching anyways.

did you hook it to the tow point? if you used anything else you could have tweaked some stuff. It might just be stuck or need some lube.

TO: Sadly stuck,
Sounds like you tweaked the latch during the tow job.. Knocked something oul of adjustment. It still works. Propably somethein is slightly out of place. I guage what I can't see with some soft stuff on the latch and partially close the lid. A little modeling clay, playdough or soft 3M strip caulk will show if the parts are close to where they should be. You might try this on a working trunk release to see what the right pattern looks like. (Before you loosen up the latch parts draw arround the edges with a fine felt tip pen so you can replace the to where they were if you need to.) Make a decision what is the problem. Broken, bent, misaligned, twisted...Take some action, repair, replace, adjust, bend or shim(washers) etc. Dop what it takes to make it work or you will be visiting the body shop.
Good Luck
