Default Stroker? Vtec or non Vtec. D or B series.

First off is a nube question. I keep seeing "Stroker" all over the forums. Can someone explain?

Second is im trying to pick an engine to build for a budget build, daily driver. Im debating between a D16Y8 and a B18A1 - B1. There all pritty easy engines to get a hold of with comparable horsepower. I want to build it a little to squeeze some more hp out of it and get up around 150-160hp. And then its the debate between the D16 VTEC and the B18 NonVTEC. The higher torque is nice but the vtec is also fun..... Just cant decide. Can we have some discussion?

Stroker refers to someone increasing the stroke of an engine (changing the crankshaft) which increases the displacement and power (torque).

Your horsepower goal would be easier to achieve and more reasonable to expect in the larger displacement b18a/b than the smaller D16y8. Even though the D series has the "magical VTEC" it still will be harder to produce the power you want unless you go turbo. Search this forum for All motor LS builds and you'll see at least one good build. Read through the Forum rules and FAQ's at the top of this forum and you'll find lots of useful information as well.

150-160 WHP??

achieving that on a d-series a bit of a challenge but certainly not unattainable. I recommend going to d-series.org for more information about the y8. If you were to go the D route...be sure to do your hw before you put money into it.

what's your goal though in the end?

The d series vtec is more so a economy function than power when compared to dohc(B)...so that would cancel out your vtec for fun factor.

I am a d-series fan though.

Honestly im in it more for the build then I am the end product. Let me clarify..... Im going to enjoy restoring the car and then enjoy driving around in a semi-classic Honda opposed to building something to challenge everyone out there with a whale tale on there car Im looking for this to end up in an 88-91 civic sedan. The d16y8 bone stock is an upgrade for that car. Its going to be a daily driver. But I figured since im going to go through all this work to restore one i wanted to swap in a more powerful engine. I owned a 2000 Civic EX with the D16Y8 and it was fun. And ive had a 90 Integra with a B18A1 (I would go with a B18B1) and that had a different power feel to it insted of it all being in the top end. I def want something that can be very modestly built and be as sporty as a....... 99-00 SI for example. Know what I mean?

All else being equal, I would pick the LS over the D-series. I drive a hatch with a D16Z6, and it's fun, but it's tough to beat the torque of the larger displacement LS.
