Kyokugen lug nuts own me.. a little lug nut help, please..
Ok, before i even start, i'll say i did the search, but was a little unclear about what I should do.. so nyah..
anyhow.. so I was a dummy and bought the kyokugen lug nuts for my Rota Slipstreams.. well, as you probably expect, the nuts and the key are both stripping and this is the first time i need to take them off(just put them on 2 weeks ago).. i can get them off, but i'm going to need to replace them with something..
I was wondering, what should I replace these with? Are there any similar lugs that are tapered, but won't strip or break the key? I checked into McGard's and Gorillas, but it appeared they only come in 4 lug sets.. if i bought either of these, does anyone know where to get a 5 lug set? what is the quality of the mugen and rays sets? suggestions are appreciated.. thanks..

kyokugen lug nuts are really junk. even u torque them right, it will bite the rim after a hot track day. get a set of volk, they are real nice.
CORRECTION Torque Wrench OwnZ j00! ! ! ! !
they really are junk, i learned the hard way..
I had a set on my Honda and have some on order for my car now. You know I have seen a dozen times that people have problems with these lugs but I never had one problem. Maybe I got the one good set??

I'd have to say I've put about 40 sets of kyokugens out there, 90% of which were torqued on by myself, and I have not yet had a problem. These are mainly street cars though, with an exception of a couple of cars that are weekend auto-x-ers. But so far no problems with the key.
Out of some of the problem vehicles... how much torque are you guys putting on these lugs, and are you really using a torque wrench everytime? Do you re-torque after after a week or two? Are your wheels hubcentric? If not, do they have the proper hub centric rings to compensate? Just curious, I want to know if these are isolated problems... I don't want to have to recall all these lug nuts.

i usually torque them at 75.
IM me for solution!!! i had the same problem a week ago.
You just have to be real careful with these SOB's...it only takes one time with airtools to make you spend $20 on a new key.

I have had Koyokugens, Mugens, and now splinedrives by Mc Gard. The Splines are the best by far, Mugens a close second, but they only have 1 wheel lock. Whereas the Mc Gards you need a key for every lug. The Koyos, well, those are total pieces. I dont understand why people still buy them. YOu hear people going through hell with Koyos all the time, and no one complains about Mc Gards. So why would you ever think about buying anything else?

01-0531 (10:26 PM 8/21/2002): how many are stripped first of all. If its only one, and the rest are good to go as far as removing (not too tight), go to pepboys and buy a 15 mm 12sided socket. Get a mallet or hammer and ram it into the stripped nut.
01-0531 (10:29 PM 8/21/2002): also, if u have a impact wrench handy, they sale stripped lug nut sockets at kragens, pepboys, autozone..etcetc.

the problem is with your lug key. I'm sure yours is the 1st generation key (i had the same). They now have a updated key that works without ANY problems. your best bet is to contact mackin industry in Santa fe Springs. Ask for Steve, he'll set u straight. good luck!
the mcgard splinedrives kick ***. and they come in 4 or 5 lug.
and the mcgards are tapered, right?

Call Mackin Industries and tell them what you're experiencing...1-800-821-6025, in my personal experiences they have been very helpful...some people say otherwise. Mackin Industries is the importer of the Kyokugen lug nuts...the keys were initially made out of a cheap pot metal, since then they have requested that they produce them out of a higher grade material...they gave their distributors free keys to replace the ones that were breaking...I learned this information from the GM of Mackin...

How many of the people that have problems with Kyokugen lug nuts use anti-seize on the wheelstuds?
I've NEVER had a problem and I change wheels more often than 99% of people out there.

I use gorilla small diameter tuner lug nuts. They look similar to the mcgard splinedrives, but are way cheaper. You can get them in black or chrome too! Go to http://www.jcwhitney.com or any local discount tire/america's tire company store. They should be around $30 compared to ~$75-80 for the mcgards.
I think the main problem with the Kyokugens is the owners, they install them with air tools, these lug nuts dont like air tools, I have had mine for over a year and have had 0 problems.
