It sounds like you're making the common error of mistakenly thinking that tread width is a major factor in performance. It's not! Performance is determined primarily when you choose the make and model of tire, because the construction features (primarily compound and tread pattern) are largely responsible for how well the tire grips. A stickier tire in a slightly narrower tread width will virtually ALWAYS give you better grip and performance than a less sticky tire in a slightly wider tread width.

Here are the stickiest, highest-performance street tires you can put on a '97-00 Civic:

15" wheels
Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec 195/55-15
Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 205/50-15
Kumho Ecsta XS 205/50-15
Yokohama Advan Neova AD08 205/50-15
Toyo R1R 205/50-15

16" wheels
Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 205/45-16
Kumho Ecsta XS 215/45-16
Toyo R1R 205/45-16

All of these are STICKIER and will give BETTER PERFORMANCE than any other street tire, even one with 225 treadwidth.

Let me just simply state that the common mistake that you are referring to is for FWD vehicles i am merely asking for facts if there is any knowledge of wider tires on an EK/EJ chassis.... simply because i want to do it. and to rebuttle your information i am a former GTR drifter on MT Haruna... was stationed there for 4 years and YES the wider the better for 4WD or RWD vehicles... and also the sticky.. believe i have been to SUPER AUTOBACS off RTE 246 where they sell used RB26DETT motors for the price of GSRs in the US several times in one weekend to change out the sticky's. Thanks for the info it will not be wasted.. looking for some stickys for the BBR COMPs

WRONG. It's equally true for RWD vehicles and AWD vehicles. Crappy, wider tires don't give you as much traction as sticky, narrower tires. Period.

You can fit 225/45-15 but you will probably have to roll your fenders to do so, and you'll need rims 7.0-8.5 inches wide. Choices for street tires in that size are limited. You can get the Hankook R-S2 Z212 in that size, but it won't grip as well as the above tires in narrower sizes.

Sounds like you've never driven on a racetrack.

What does Super Autobacs have to do with anything? There really is no reason to go any wider than 205's on a street Civic.
