Default Code 1457 Replaced 36162-P2M-A11. Same code Same Smell

Code 1457 Replaced 36162-P2M-A11

I drive an EM1 and had code P1457 come up about a month ago. The car has 150,000 miles on it. The car was obviously throwing the code and also had this horrid smell of gas which is pretty noticeable when I would get out of the car. I took it to a reputable mechanic, I don't have the tools, time, or knowledge to do it myself. The car was in the shop for almost 2 weeks diagnosing. He stated he had never seen this particular code on this model, he mention accords were infamous for it but not my si. To give you some history on the car, it is from Ohio where I assume it saw snow at some point of the year. I purchased the car and am now in Las Vegas where it never snows. He mentioned that the "rust" could have something to do with it???(From the snow I guess) Anyhow the code is still on and I still get the same smell and im that much in debt. Im not looking for "take it back to the mechanic and tell him to get it right" Im just trying to be ahead of him and see what you suggest would be the next place to go.

The first thing I did was replace the gas cap because this could be potentially causing the problem and cheapest place to start.

Thanks for the input ahead of time.

Well p1457 has to do with your evap system obviously. I recently had the same code on my 00 civic ex. My problem was that i had a plug unplugged next to the fuel rail. Basically that code pops when you have a leak somewhere in the evap system. It could be that your gas tank had a hole rusted in it, your filler hose is cracked, a gasket is not sealing, a leaking hose, or the valves might not be working on your gas tank. You say you mention you have a gas smell, so it sounds like you have a leak, and no problem with the valves. I'd start by visually inspecting all the hoses in the engine for cracks, check the filler hose, and check out the gas tank to see if its rusted.

Customer Concern: The check engine light is on. Trouble code P1457.

Tests/Procedures: 1. The code is for a leak on the charcoal canister side of the evaporative system. The canister on this vehicle is under the hood and the bypass solenoid/2-way valve and pressure sensor are above the rear corner of the fuel tank.

2. The first test is to verify that the canister vent shut valve, on the top of the canister, will operate and close when the Green/White wire is grounded. Also, verify that the Engine Control Module (ECM) does not have it energized. If that valve operates, then test the bypass solenoid. The best place to test and ground the bypass solenoid, without a scan tool, is to remove the bottom of the backseat and locate the 6-cavity Gray connector by the fuel-sending unit. Ground the Blue wire and listen for the bypass solenoid to operate. If the bypass solenoid does not click, verify that there is battery voltage on the Black/White wire. The bypass solenoid can fail and sometimes the connector can corrode. Also, the bypass solenoid and 2-way valve can leak internally. Most of the time, if the canister vent shut valve operates and there are no leaks in the canister or hoses, the bypass solenoid and the 2-way valve are the parts that fail. Always replace both parts together.

Potential Causes: Bypass Solenoid / 2-Way Valve
Canister Vent Shut Valve
Electronic Control Module (ECM)
Leaking Hose

Tech Tips: If possible, verify that the ECM can ground the solenoids when commanded through a scan tool. Refer to Honda TSB #03-001 for possible damage to the ECM. In some cases, when the ECM was damaged from a shorted bypass solenoid, the engine cooling fan would be running all the time and the ECM has the cooling fan circuit grounded. If the vehicle has less than 80,000 miles on it, the ECM would be covered under warranty from Honda.
