Default primer and paint chemical reaction?

I'm getting ready to paint my car and I was doing some prep work. This will be my first paint project so i'm very new to all this and I am doing it on my daily so I will be doing it over the course of about two weeks. I'm hoping to do this a time or two for practice and then take some auto body classes at the local college later on.

Anyway, my question is this. I was told by the owner of a local body shop that if you used certain primer the basecoat would chemically react and cause problems. I'm doing spot repair and I don't just want to leave a patch of bondo open to the elements.

Is it ok to use spray can primer underneath of dupont basecoat? I'm using duplicolor primer/sealer. I didn't want to have to do the spot repair twice...

no its not ok to shoot basecoat over rattle can primer. It will def react and cause major problems. The reason being the rattle can primer is not catalyzed and the solvents in the basecoat will react with it. Best bet is to sand it back off when your done and shoot it with some 2k primer or sealer.

they say always use one system of paint from beginning to end... like dont use ppg primer then akzo nobel paint... or house of colors candy then sherwin williams clear.

in other words dont mix match.

and i wouldnt paint over anything thats been rattle canned period. but u can always do it and tell us what happens =D

negative on the rattlecan, hell, if you use the correct cleaning solvents they will destroy that rattle can crap and react all over the place. rattle can primer is junk, and should definitely not be used under any circumstances with real automotive paint products.

I don't want to get jumped on or anything, but my brothers car was painted in stages. Before it went in for paint, many filled areas had rattle can primer over them here and there all over the car. Looked like a cow.

Primer and B/C went over just fine? It's been about 2 years now and still looks great.

i guess i'll just say. you're better safe then sorry. if rattle can was known to be 100percent solid i dont think paint shops would exist.

thats all good and dandy, but depending on the shop that stuff will not be sufficient. if you came into our shop and the car was rattlecanned, you would either be charged to strip it and prime it with 2k, or if you werent trying to do that we wouldnt work on your car. If its not done the way its supposed to be done from start to finish than we cant warranty anything. And it also depends on the cleaning system that the shop is using, how good of a product, etc. Our shop uses dupont cleaning system. The first step that we use is a solvent called fittingly FIRST KLEEN. That one step alone will destroy and bubble any primer that is not activated. any rattle can primer will not stand up to it, its a "hot" solvent, almost like lacquer thinner and basically melts air and solvent release cured primers. some shops dont even bother to clean a car before they start prep or bodywork and may only use a final cleaning solution which is less harsh and evaporates quickly and is a "cold" solvent that doesnt react with anything, just goes on and brings dirt to the surface than after wiping evaporates. That will not cause reaction with most spray can primers. But its also not how it should be done. theres stages and steps for a reason. But were also a high end, privately owned paint shop that focuses on quality on wow factor, not a widely known production shop thats looking to make quick bucks with shoddy work.
