Very stripped crx... Interrior options
So my crx is my daily race car
I drive it every day and love it! The thing is stripped of everything i dont need(see pics) which has left the car very bare and cold(which i actually like) looking.
So my thoughts are now going into covering some of the bare metal in a tasteful yet very lightweight way. My ideal solution would be carbon fiber panels over everything. Box off areas and have it resemble something of a cockpit, with more legroom :p
But as with the rest of the world my funds are tight, so CF is not a great option. The premade flat panels are very expensive in the correct sizes, and the raw is still a bit much at this time (i also have a lot of experience working and moulding CF).
I was going to paint the interrior metal black, it would smooth things out well and look great, but i hate tints so i think i would be creating a nice little oven(remember no ac. not even a fan)
So im up for suggestions. Does anyone have any sources for thin flat panels of fiberglass(i can never get it that flat or light). Other ideas or suggestions welcome, maybe there is another material or option i havent yet explored, thats where you come in!
As for the passanger area, i will have a laptop with solid state drive(my car shakes like a small dog) that will be removable so i can throw a passanger seat in if needed, so the paneling will need to accomidate this(removable section with dzeus fasteners maybe)

Eh im looking for something a little more fun :p
Im going through all my old CF distributors tomorrow, see if i can get any good prices. Found one site with some great prices, just going to have to refine my skills in making flat sheets i suppose.

Does anyone know what the deal is legally with custom or replacement dashes? My vin plate was gone when i got rid of the old dash. If you have a custom one will they issue a new plate to pin on there or ?
i know its a felony in colorado to tamper with a vin plate, havent had any issues so far.

By removing it. I don't think you should have problems. As long as all the parts match and nothing is stolen you should be fine. Just remove the vin plate if you put a new dash in.
I'd just get a dash and door pannels and call it good your maybe saving 25-40 pounds at the most and those will protect you alot in a wreck also. And who knows maybe op carrys a gun and all the locals know it so no one messes with his stuff. Looks to me he lives in the outsirts of town to were you would get shot no questions for messin with a car to.
Hah yeah i live in Aspen colorado at the moment, the only crime here is drunk bastards driving home or fighting on the 2:45am bus.
I did live in North Hollywood for about a year, never had a problem

i'd say go to the junk yard and find all the parts you are missing and put them back in the car, i think that stripped interior look like crap, they say for every 100 pound removed you will gain .10 in the quarter mile, wow you maybe are saving 100lb but made your car looks bad, get a high horsepower engine and you will not have to worry about 100lb and ur car would look better but that just my two cents
My buddies crx is very similar. He has a plexi glass hatchwindow and the driver and passenger windows removed. No one cares to steal his car though
Yeah i do intend on drag racing at the track, but its not something i really care about. Its just a project car, without taking the next big step i cant gain a whole lot more hp (next step being, turbo, supercharger, or $$ na) and i love the concept and feel of a stripped car. The car is much more nimble now, brakes great, and very quick for the little power i have(b18). Stock brakes and suspension mind you, still pullin 1.04g on the skidpad with puny 185s
When i sell my 600rr i will have a daily driver that is very very nice and will make many pop a wood. Not speaking about it until i can sell the bike though.
Anyway if anyone is curious here are the numbers on the weight savings if anyone is curious.
wouldnt use that link he provided for any kind of real numbers. They are all way off, just an estimate thats on the heavy side.
Here are some numbers from my crx when i stripped it. All measurements were done with a doctor style slide scale in the same day with me holding the item in a <1 lb box.
All items are from an 88 Crx hf, if there are two items(matching sides like speakers) then they are measured together and totaled.
AC System Brakedown Total 56.5 (note this is ALL heating/cooling stuff)
-Pump+bracket 25lbs
-Tubes condensor, resivoir 11lbs
-AC core and small fittings 7.5lbs
-Blower fan, wires, heater core, small parts and plastics left 13lbs
Random things
Spare tire 20.5 lbs
Door panels 9
Rear curvy plastic panels, metal brackets, and trim(rear strip) 19lbs
center plastic/storage box, entire center console, 14lbs
Front speakers 2lbs
rear speakers 6.5lbs (yeah i dont know either)
Misc parts, floor mats, brackets, 13lbs
Dash 14.5lbs
carpet plus remaining trim 13lbs
radio climate stuff etc, 6lbs
Misc bag full of bits and pieces 4.5
Dash supports and remaining plastic heater/cooling tubes 3lbs
Switched to momo seat 11lbs lighter
passanger seat 16lbs
battery 25lbs (keep in mind i had a HUGE truck battery, now i have a lawnmower battery)
233.5 lbs so far no safety devices removed(metal bumpers f/r etc)
I couldnt measure my rear hatch glass which i have changed to about 3 lbs of lexan, but i really dont think it weighed that much, 10lbs max (mine came out in a bucket/vaccume)

For what you are looking for nice job. You should look into a carbon hood as well just to lose a little more. Is this an HF model?
EDit: judging by no rear sound insulation I assume it is.

Put your f~ing horn back in. That's retarded.
When you have a mechanical failure and become a menace on the road, you have no way to warn people... or some person about to hit you and not paying attention...

haha the horn was a byproduct of a lack of patience, the traditional horn is no longer. Iv made a button that attaches to the back of the steering wheel at about 9oclock that now activates the horn.
Yeah small cars need horns.
Yup its an HF lightweight doors ftw!!

You must get some pretty decent MPG in this thing huh?
For the interior panels I have an idea......Coroplast.
I deliver mail and decided to tear out some of my interior from the wear and tear of delivering mail and packages.
It is basically like plastic corrugated cardboard (Corrugated + Plastic = Coroplast). You should be able to find it at most any sign shop. I found whole 4 foot x 8 foot sheets for $8 each. It also comes in a whole rainbow of colors.
It worked great for me using the panels that I ripped out as templates for the Coroplast.

Haha yeah, i remember coroplast now. Lots of guys use those for belly pans and to block off their radiator and rear wheels for aero. Coloplast might be a good idea for backing cf in some areas too, thanks!
Yeah my car gets amazing mpg. The last calculation i did over 300 miles i got 37mpg, thats with some very spirited driving. if i pussyfoot it i can get 40+ easy.
