once again poor gas mileage
Hi everyone thank you for reading this message i have a 1996 honda accord ex wagon have had a tune with new plugs fuel filter air filter and dcap. Also had the timing belt and tsat changed the car has 136k on it. tire pressure has been checked the car is only getting 22 city and highway . no check engine light. the water temp stays at a quater . Please advise
Did you try other stuff to replace?
Never mentioned the air filter, PCV valve, Fuel injectors cleaned/replaced, or maybe the engine just really could just be gunked up real bad with carbon deposits.
Need more information, but the AF and PCV valve cost next to nothing, try those.

could also be the driving conditions. If you are drive pedal to the metal all the time or if you are in stop and go traffic, all the time, and are not getting up to normal operating speed where a vehicle gets its best gas mileage (i believe 55) then you will not get as good of gas mileage.
^^I think he is checking it with the old Miles driven divided by gallons just put into the tank on the fill up. Could be wrong.

I have honda accord 2002, 4cyl just hit 60k. I drive it to work about 1.7miles, and back home. Mileage is around 13-15 and If I drive on highways.. it goes around 23-25miles.. I use gumout regularly to clean Fuel injector. Any suggestions? I read about AF and PCV valves.. is it easy to buy it and replace it myself?
Thanks for any replies.

Well for the valves question, if you have a VTEC engine, you really should get them adjusted, or you will develop a small tapping sound during the VTEC crossover on some accelerations, that is what I have going on right now for me.
As for the AF and PCV replacement. It is very very simple. Assuming it is an I4 engine, not a V6, the PCV is connected to the top of the valve cover and has a vacuum hose on the other end leading to the intake manifold in the back by the firewall. It is a simple as grabbing the side of it and pulling out of the valve cover. Then take some pliers and move the clamp down the vacuum line a little bit so you can pull the other end of the PCV out of the vacuum line. Then just put the new one in and do the exact opposite. A quick test for a PCV valve to make sure it is functioning is to shake it up and down and you should hear it clicking inside.
As for the AF, just find the AF box, I believe it is in front of the passenger side headlight, and unscrew the bolts holding the box down, take the old AF out and put the new one in.
Hope this helps.

im refering to the 1st click method. you u do it the way your talking about its not as accurate. you you filled up pass the first click the first time but not the second time its not as accurate. needs to check filling up to the first click 1st and second fillup.
22-25 mpg is nothing to worry about, and you need to fill it up to the first click then refill to the 1st click on the pump again then do the math. also run intake system cleaner through to clean out them cylinders. clean your throttle plate up and adjust you throttle cable if out of spec range also check your idling.
Steelth: if your gettin 13-15 mpg in the city you must be droppin fuel man or your math is way off. I went from 25mpg to 19mpg after turbo setup with twice the injector size tuned to dump more fuel in. and i have a heavy foot on top of that.

Well, Like I explained, I drive less than 2 miles one way to work and that means before car gets warmed up I park my car. And then I go eat my lunch which is another 1-2 miles. one way. So it is like driving less than 7miles a day. And I have to fill up the car once a month. Miles are around 185-200 and it takes 12-13 gallons to fill it up. When I drive on interstate I get mileage increased. It used to be 30-32 mpg when I used to drive 60-100miles a day on interstate. But since I drive for such a short distance, my mpg is way too low.
Newho I decided to change AF and PCV. Honda dealer is selling it for 32.76 and 23.08. May have to add tax to it.
Thanks for reply accord99power. Please advise me on PCV changing, few points that i have to watch out for. AF is simple, I guess.
( I really need help on installing AVIC F900BT that is on its way. If any one can guide me with pics/videos..links to anything that helps, that would be really helpful. I do not want to create a mess of it, as I have to join VSS and rear brake lights and running wires/cables under carpet. )
Edit: Oh yeah.. I have a very heavy foot. PPl get out of my way and call me airborne.
but that is me..
I tried that, A/C turned on or not Does not make much difference. Like in Spring times, I have no A/c on. Even in summer, I have to open up windows to get all the hot air out, and by the time I think about A/c. I am out of the car. But to answer your question, I tested it without A/c and it really did not change anything.

ahhhhh this explains alot, before your car reaches normal operating temp your rpms are higher=more gas consumption. so your calculation for the "city" only consist on data from not even reachin your normal operating temp. And when u compare it to highway after operating temp been reach youll see a difference.
I get my PCV from Oreilys, Autozone, etc. PCV is easy to change. I attached a pic to this message. get some pliers and squeeze the clip at the end of the hose shown in pic. Push the clip back down the hose. pull the PCV (looks like an L ) out of the valve cover. Hold the hose and pull the PCV off the hose. Installation is reverse nothin else needed.
what is this?
now this is funny!

history is my Factory installed CD player works only when CAR is hot.. else, on cold mornings or in winter time all day long, it pushes any CD out. wont even read it. SO I decided to have GPS navigator + DVD player installed. I ordered it above, but couple of wires need to be attached to Parking brake, Rear brake light and RPM sensing cable on ECM. also, to hide cables, I have to lift the carpet etc. I tried to find out on forum if any one has installed it and if so, what are the catches and watches.. etc.
So, you suggest to get AF and PCV from AZone? that would be nice. Azone is 2 miles while Honda is about 10mile plus higher prices.
Thanks again for such a nice effort to explain PCV thing.

its 100F here.. so

Edit: damn.. you live in Pensacola? :O... i was there 1st week of June. My fav one is Navvare Summerwind. I go there twice atleast in a year.. i am jealous now..
your welcome man anytime, go to the link here and post your question on the gps hookup i never hookedup nagigation or anything so dont have direct experience with it. https://honda-tech.com/forums/audio-security-video-27/ good luck on the install sounds sweet!
yes i suggest to go to oreily if you have one or advanced autoparts first before autzone prices usually are higher. but for the pcv and airfilter youll be fine without going to honda for.
yes sir i been here for awhile and love it thanks, navarre is beautiful im jealous! haha.
