timing belt
Usually about 30-40 bucks.
Pretty easy if you can get the crank pulley bolt off lol. You will probably need an air impact, electric ones usually don't cut it or if you have the tool from Snap-On.

if he sold it cause it was broken and thats why it needs a belt.. then most likely the engine is trashed. now if its just old and needs replaced then thats another story.
this is for a 92-95 civic, but its going to be virtually the same.
edit: forgot that it also has how to for the waterpump at the end of it as well lol

remove all accessories and belts from the motor, remove the driver side engine mount, remove the FL wheel, remove all parts of the timing cover, rotate crankshaft to TDC, remove crank bolt(HARD), loosen timing belt tensioner, rotate tensioner to relieve stress on timing belt, line up crankshaft notch with oil pump arrow, make sure the camshaft sprocket didn't move(UP should be facing up, and the two horizontal lines on the pulley should be lined up with the top surface of the cylinder head),install new timing belt, make sure everything is lined up again, tension the belt again(forget if it's three notches clockwise or counterclockwise?), reassemble.
That's it in a nutshell. Don't do it if you are sketchy, you'll be buying a new motor... or at least a new head.
