Default On a scale of 1 to 10..

10 being "Super ******* retarded" and 1 being "Well educated decision" please rate these bike possibilities I am considering.

Those who hang around this forum know that I'm knew to riding, but I'm not stupid, and I will be careful, wear the gear, etc.. blah blah. My goal was to find a CBR600 for $4000-4500.

The current prospect however is really local..

'97 Red CBR 900 RR (Detroit, MI)
Color: Red
Miles: 8000
Mods: Dynojet Jet Kit, Akrapovic Race Exhaust
Condition: Excellent.

Misc:
This bike has a full service history.
The plastic is perfect.
New Mich Pilot Sports (this year)
Full 8000 mile service done this spring. Valves adjusted
all fluids replaced.
I change the oil every fall when stored and
every spring when brought out for riding. Plus
every 2000 miles in the middle.

And he would give me a pretty good price.. he said it dyno'ed at 118rwhp though.

Would I be just completely out of my mind if I got this? I need advice..

This bike is newer, less miles, local, with some gear, for less money.

If you can get a good 900rr for 4000-4500 hop on it, that is a good deal. Even if you dont keep it you can sell it and make money off it. Stunters are running in flocks for any good condition 900rr's. I was looking for one forever, but the 96-99 900rr's are still selling from 5-7 grand. Just look on ebay, you will see what i mean.

It might be too much bike for a newbie though, just keep that in mind if you are new to riding that it has alot more hp and tq than a 500-600cc bike does and is capable of actual speeds close to 170mph. (Speedo correction factor bike speedo will show ~180 mph or so).

are you an experienced rider?

The 9RR is a great bike...but definately unnecessary unless you are a bigger guy.

Personally a 600 will do fine on an average sized person. I used to own a 9RR and got rid of it for a 600 that may be slower in the straights but will walk all over a 9RR in the corners with an average/ skilled rider.

In fact...i don't know how if this still hold true, but when the R6 came out, they compared it to the R1 and the R6 would beat the R1 in lap times.

And the R1 doesn't exactly handle like ****!!

But if you want straight line power...get the 9RR it's definately fast. But if you want something that handles more than anything, get something like a 600 or maybe a 750.

Good luck.

I'm not using the 'bigger guy' thing as an excuse to get a bigger bike.. right now this bike might just fall into place. I would definately prefer a nice CBR600. I am 6'3", about 185 though.

I think I'm getting a pretty good deal on it, and it would be a bike to play around with. Meanwhile I could look for that perfect CBR600 I want.. that's kinda what I'm thinking right now.

I know any sport bike's straight line speed is gonna blow me out of the water. I also love something that handles nice too.

I am new to riding, I've taken and passed the MSF course though. I would definately take my time learning on a bike like this though..

Buy it and sell it for a profit.

If you do this and survive, you have way more self-control than I do. I have enough of a hard time with my '96 VFR, which is not particularly fast as modern sportbikes go. In the same position, I would buy it, shine it up, and sell it to one of the bike stunnaz around here. But then, I'm a small-bike/supermotard junkie and have no particular need or desire for a liter-class sportbike

I might get it.. ride it for a while and then look into trading it for a 600 something later down the road.

Hopefully I don't **** it up or anything..

I hope you don't but I'm willing to bet you will... most likely walking it around a parking lot. Also the ergos on the 9's are a bit more edgy than the 600s. R6ish riding position. The tank really hugs your torso. I'd say one of the selling point of the 600s are the daily comfort while maintaining the full down race position. Also the predictable power delivery and handling dynamics. The 9 is just more extreme across the board. It also take a lot more effort to move at low speed. And it has the ability to get you in more trouble faster. Including unwanted attention. And don't forget insurance. I've noticed you've been taking your time and that's good but don't take your patience in finding the right bike as actual time spent riding and gaining experience. Seems the longer you go before you buy a bike, the bigger your eyes get. 600cc's should be the upper range to begin w/.

EDIT: 7

I think that's kinda true. In my case, the longer I go before I buy a bike, the more open I am to other bike possibilities, like this 900.

I would prefer a CBR600 but for one reason or another I just don't have one yet.

Argh, who knows what's going to happen? School starts in a week, and if I got it now I would have minimal time to ride it.
