Default Brake lights out indicator

Hi folks,

Lately my 1992 Accord has had the light for 'brake lights out' come on on the dash. Every time, the brake lights (all of them) are working. What could be the cause? I am a Volvo person, and in old Volvos there is a relay/sensor circuit that detects uneven voltage draw and displays a dash light if they are sufficiently uneven.

Thanks! I'm not afraid to tackle this job myself, I just have no idea where to start.

Ari

Either one or both failure sensors are bad, or an open cicuit between the two. Get a wiring diagram and start doing ohm checks!

BRAKE FLUID? Please explain! Thanks!

Also, in Volvos the failure mode of the bulb out sensor is that the lights stop working. Is this not true for Hondas?

If you have low brake fluids then it'll throw the Brake Light on.

It's not the [BRAKE] light, it's the little [brake lights] light on the dash transmission gear indicator. It has the little picture of the car.

Your bulbs are most likely dual filament, are ALL of them good? If you just turn on your lights you're looking at the lower filament. On top of that what kind of bulbs are you using? LED's will trigger that response due to low resistance. If you're using an incorrect bulb then that could also trigger it.

It seems like the bulbs are working fine, but I will replace all my bulbs - I can't remember when they were changed, must have been years - and see if the problem presents itself again. In the meantime, I will check the fluid level in my MC. :O

Thanks!

try unpluging all the wires that go to the brake lights and reconnect them all securely. my car was doing the same thing due to the wires not being tight.

As stated above one of the failure sensors has probably gone bad. Replace those and your problem should be solved.

I dunno if you checked your running lights, whether they are dual filaments or not but turn on your headlights and see if the other filament is out in the rear
