Default 91 dx new head, car smokes need help

Alright I bought this for 150 bucks to turn around and sell. I thought it just needed a new head so I put a known good head (91 crx si was fine when I took it off and I also got it milled) and put it on there. Car still smokes, and a lot. I am getting a signifigant amount of oil on the plugs and out the exhaust. Car compression tests good 170-180-175-180 so not bad. I am thinking rings need replaced? any ideas guys thanks

why did it need a new head? if it was a blown headgasket the piston rings may be bad from water getting into the cyl and scrapping them up. just did a headgasket on a 91 wagon same thing.

Spark plug gaskets? there is no oil on sitting on top of the spark plugs and if it was how could it be getting in the cylinders. You are talking about the 4 in the valve cover right?

If the piston rings were bad from wear wouldn't it not compression test well? Thanks guys and keep the input comin

Oil can only get into the combustion chamber a few ways. Rings are probably the culprit if you are 100% sure the head and new headgasket are fine. Did you install the head gasket upside down?

Hopefully I didn't. I thought when I was doing it that it looked as if it only went on one way. I will check again when I get home(I have the old one lying around) I used a fel pro one from autozone. With this headgasket is the side with the writing up or down?

I can't remember if it is the same for B & D-series, but I know on the MLS B-series head gaskets, there is a stamp on the top that says "UP". Is the Felpro one MLS, or is it fiber?

it is fiber and I am pretty sure it only goes on one way. The wrong way and the oil drain holes do not line up. can someone correct me if I am wrong?

Also do the metal z6/y8 metal head gaskets seal better than the fiber ones?

I am pretty positive it is my oild rings but it compression tests good and has no blowby.

I always throw those fiber ones in the garbage and use a new Z6 MLS gasket.

ive read the metal y8 gasket is the way to go......as for the good comp numbers, your oil rings can be bad and still have good compression......im new to the d's though comin from a k20 to a d16 was a bit of a wake up...so sorry for any wrong info

Definitely could be valve stem seals, but I was assuming the head was known to be good. Judging by your first post, I assume you are sure it is oil smoke and not coolant vapor. You say you are getting liquid oil out the exhaust? That's a pretty significant amount of oil leakage if that is the case. What is your rate of oil consumption?

Did you ever find out what the problem is? I have an 89 dx that blows smoke too. Mine does it when it is first started, and also blows a large puff of blue smoke when I press the gas after letting the car coast in gear for a bit. I checked my compression too, it didn't do it with the throttle wide open. I got 130, 130, blank, 150. The blank is because the spark plug tube had some casting imperfections and the socket would not go in there. I'm going to check the compression again. I really hope it's not the rings and is just valve stem seals. The car sat for years without use before I bought it. I'm hoping the seals just got sry and is now leaky... I also have positive pressure from the oil filler she the car is running. It blows air and splashes oils if I open the oil filler cap while running. Anybody have any ideas??

Sounds like valve stem seals to me. It could be a combination of the stem seals and a small (maybe even relatively insignificant) amount of blow-by.
