Default Bizarre Stumble 88-DX 1.5L

Hey guys, I've got a very interesting problem going on.

I've had this car for quite a while now, it has 188K on it and ran like a champ up until a few weeks ago. It developed a stumble when you give the throttle a jab. Other than that it runs fine. the wierdest part is that when I try and drive it on the highway, at almost exactly 45 minutes (no joke, happened twice) it starts to stumble as if its getting a very short fuel cut. this happens probabbly once or twice ever 10-15 seconds, then it starts to get more and more frequent. I barely limped it home both times. If I sit in the car and put it to the floor while in neutral it will stumble and then rev just fine. I did that about 20 times and it finally tossed me a code. I got 4, 8, 10, and 16. From what some of my freinds who do alot of work on these guys says is that the crank positions sensor and the other sensors from the 4, 8 and 10 codes rarely go out. the 16 is for the fuel injectors/fuel injector circuit. I replaced both of those and have the same symptom. My thoughts are that the fuel pump is wearing out. I think its heating up after consistant driving (such as highway) and starts to try and seize up/die. I can't think of anything else. But, since this is such a weird problem I figured I'd throw it by you guys so I don't go to the trouble of pulling the tank and replacing the pump for nothing. Also, I can still drive it around town, no problems.. just a stumble if i stomp on it.

Thanks for the help!!

Hey, Thanks for the reply!

I replaced the fuel filter, no change... replaced the injectors... main and secondary, no change.. the fuel pump doesn't hum from what I can tell, its actually really quiet... the code it was throwing said injectors/injector circuit. How can I tell if the circuit is hosed up? Is there any relays that may be bad? or a connection I can re-solder?

haha, nice.. yeah, it has become pretty normal! It drives fine in town, every great once it awhile it will lurch really hard and "bounce" the car.. probably looks rediculous from the outside... bout hit my head on the wheel every time.

Its just the highway part that really bothers me.. because if i need to get somewhere, that is usually the car I take on trips.. now i can get about 50 miles and have to turn around..

Sounds to me like your fuel pump is heating up and crapping out.
Check the fuel pressure when it's running like crap and see what you get.

^^ yea thats about the best way right now. im not totally awesome with the whole electrical thing, but i know the main relay gives power to the pump, and there is also a secondary relay, other than that im not 100%.

before i replaced my factory struts, id hit a bump and my rear would bottom out, it was eating up my new tires, and after some many hard hits my fuel pump started having a fit, making all kinds of noise. it was pretty audible with the radio down, kinda a whine/hum put together. i changed my front suspension (kyb adj. and eibachs) and i stopped hitting so hard, and it just quit. hasnt done it since, weird. but i also refer to my car as a female, so theres no telling. lol
